Ski Racing in Torbay..
This Yacht went completely through the well laid out course twice ignoring all attempts to warn the vessel.

Go on, let's have a power gives way to sail colregs discussion. It's 23:00 and there's got to be someone who's had some sherbet.

A) Why is this in the lounge?

B) Does a race give those racing some kind of god-given right-of-way? No

C) Does a race remove any or all responsibility for complying with colregs? No

So why the 'stupid' title to your post?

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

Are you allowed to just block off part of the seaside and not allow others in your blocked off bit then ? I only ask as i was thinking about blocking off part of the M25 for a stag do .

. . . but incredibly arrogant and stupid!

Sometimes when you are cruising at about 5knots on a gentle reach, it is difficult to see a "well laid out course", they are not usually marked on any charts I have of the area.

Yes, you can see skiers being towed at up to 70 knots but when they suddenly are closing at that sort of speed it can be quite difficult to take the way off your boat and stop dead in the water. Even changing tack can take 30 seconds or so!

Perhaps that is why it is deemed that "steam gives way to sail"? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

Quite simply !!!
As I have already stated the course was clearly marked out and ALL attempts by race Marshall vessels to warn the skipper were ignored, There were a dozen or so boats with Skiers on that course racing at up to 80 miles an hour and the course itself had a designated line of voyage marked out for all other vessels to avoid that danger area. !!!!

THE REMARK 'STUPID' STANDS !!!!

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

re cold fusion

my opinion

a. maybe this should be in scuttlberks not the lounge

b. ask a raggie as when the raggies race coll regs go out the window. at least the powerboat/ ski racers have marshalls

c. no racing does not remove responsibility for complying to col regs for most people. but if you have a boat with white flappy things it seems to!!!!!

now moving to bunker

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

Perhaps you would like to explain what the "rules of the road" are in this sort of situation.

Can you please tell me who has "right of way"?

Was a "Notice to Mariners" posted for the region? Was the event mentioned by the Coastguards on Channel 16 for that day?

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

When does restricting the freedom of all others become acceptable? I'm not going to suggest that there's no time and place... but if a tin pot club of teenagers set up a course (yacht racing, waterskiiing:makes no difference) that ran right across the Solent (or any other major shipping lane)... we'd surely be looking at something very different from an Olympic or World Cup event being staged in a backwater generally frequented only by racing (waterskiing / sailing / whatever) fraternity.

As someone seriously averse to having ANY freedoms restricted... my first instincts are to cheer the raggie (and would be even if I didn't sail)... but I'm quite sympathetic to folk wanting to play in whatever way appeals... and would have loved to have had the chance to take part in ski racing / racing dingies / yachts as a kid.

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

OK, worst case scenario - collision at sea during a race between two boats - a competitor and a non-competitor. Accident results in fatalities. MAIB gets involved and finds competitor did not comply with colregs. Who is the guilty party? (I know MAIB does not like to apportion 'blame' but it does publish findings and likely cause of accident).

Family of deceased then takes case to court. Who 'wins'?

Best stay in that bunker of yours.

No rules to say he can't.

Might be an area of special interest then English Heritage might have something to say about the buoy moorings....However I hope he did get a Notice to Mariners issued and asked the Coastguard to issue warnings regarding the racing as an absolute minimum.. As suggested by another.

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

Its the kind of post from the OP that seriously makes me think that licensing has to come in to prevent idiots who know nothing of COlregs (like most of us /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif) out inconveniencing others

You say it was a a well laid out course.

Where is it in notices to mariners?

Were CG broadcasting something?

In the absence of that you have nothing official. How do you know he wasn;t also in some race and that your course arrogantly and stupidly went right across his - You don't.

In the absence of something to change them - i.e. notice to mariners - local by laws etc IRPCS stand.

Good on the sailing boat i say. Whats the betting that the Marshalls were the frequently found type of little hitlers often found as race officers / marshalls/ wardens etc.

Personally - if one of those idiots had come up to me and demanded via a megaphone that i take a detour cos his mates wanted to use that bit of water then i would have carried on though even if i was originally going to avoid. Come up alongside, shut down the engine so we can talk and ask nicely and i'm much more likely to help you out.
