As you had time to count all these MoBo's that caused you such angst, why did you not also note down their names and report them to the 'proper authorities' if you genuinely felt their behaviour was out of order? That would be much more likely to result in those you are cross with being made aware of your distress.
As an earlier poster noted, you have not filled in your profile and you obviously wish to remain 'anonymous of Portsmouth Harbour'. I would personally prefer to converse with identities rather than anonymities so will say no more - perhaps others will also now ignore you and bring this boring thread to a close.

I don't really think you have come up with a sensible solution there.
When entering the flaming portals of the motorboatie florum it's not the ideal start to go in with guns blazing. The gentle responses that you have received appear to have wound you up more than anyone else! Its a big world and most of it is covered in water so there should be room for all of us. There are daft sods in motorboats - there are also daft sods in sailing boats - thats life and shit happens.
You won't change anything and being serious, flicking whatever from a catapult is just likely to lead to a whole shedful of trouble. When you see a boat coming for you who is oblivious to the rocking you are about to receive, remember the Australian foreplay - "Brace yourself" - and then get on with the rest of your day - they don't all do it.

The more BOTH parties keep moaning/groaning making an issue getting it in the press the nearer BIG BROTHER gets.He going to slap everyone with so many conpulsery rules and regs that the relativly free pastime we all enjoy will become ballsed up with things such as driving tests etccccccccccc.
 
I'm not sure it will be moans and groans that will bring about legislation- don't you think it would be more likely to happen after a spate of (serious) accidents? With more people being encouraged to get afloat this has to be some form of timebomb we are sitting on.That's really what happened on Windermere and instead of a bit of education we have seen punitive legislation which will prevent water skiers from doing their thing and have a serious effect on the local economy through the range of businesses that depend on the MB abd waterski fraternity for income.
That can all be traced back to a fatality where a skier went one side of aboat and the tow went the other - the resulting decapitation bringing about todays sorry situation.
Personally I think it is a nonsense that there is no driving licence for boats - every bit as lethal as cars or motorbikes and the anti lobby are just as daft as those who oppose the carrying of I.D.

Well, I think people like you should 'go forth and multiply', but then again that would only increase the amount of 'in breds' in your already limited Gene pool.
 
I could agree with you but i fail to see how licensing will prevent the minority of idiots driving like idiots, it doesn't on the roads.

I also think it is v small minority of mobos is upsetting a slightly larger number of us raggies who are always banging on.

I fail to get upset by wash. wave at them and get on with your day. Having seen a large boat going past making wake at slow speed i fail to see what some of them can do. stinkies make wake, fact. sometimes it is alot ,sometimes it is a little. the inconsiderate ones a fraction of the users.

... that, as some respondents have pointed out, it is only a few "bad apples" in both the stinkpot and raggie "barrels" that give the rest of us more courteous boaters grief.

I do hope that the "road-rage" (or should that be "water rage"!?) replies from some are "tongue-in-cheek". We really should all try and get on together. There's enough aggro in the world without it spoiling our favourite pass-time too.

If you've been "washed" then make a note of position/time/vessel name and report to harbour master. Let him deal with it. I was "washed" on Sunday whilst at anchor - managed to keep my coffee off the deck, but the vacuum flask is a gonner! This was a small-ish speedboat with no name visible, so, not much I could do there.

By the way, would you call me a "ragpot" or a "stink-something"? I have motor sailer!!!

Look, you make no progress with your attitude. Your entire thread - your contributions to it, not those of others - just adds to the divide between motorboaters and sailors. Sure, there are bad motorboaters, just like bad raggies and car drivers etc, but your tar-all-with-same-brush attitude simply antagonises those who dont misbehave. Suggesting a tax on fuel will change anything is plain stupid - and for the record I couldn't care less becuase the cost of fuel is insignificant to boat ownership and if it goes up by x3 it will remain that way.

But Mike, wise up, if there is something sensible to suggest to fix the washing problem and educate bad motorboaters, then suggest it. But picking a fight doesn't help bridge the divide at all. And a few of the mags have carried just the articles you mention in the last few months. The piece by Tom Issit suggested that raggies exaggerate the bad effects of wash, by the way.

Putting aside for the moment the fact that in general a sailing craft at anchor will respond better to wash (less effect) than a planning hull I would suggest that everything here comes down to consideration.

To illustrate this point :- a couple of weeks a go I was anchored over Poole Outer Patch early, quietly drowing worms. Over the morning a number of other boats approached the general area, anchored peacefully and quietly until around 40 boats were there by mid morning. At around 1115 the sailing brigade (most under power) piled straight through the fleet whilst the motor boats went round some distance away. A quick look at the map shows that the yachties were taking the straight line route to the solent, and the MBs probably weren't worried about auto pilots 'cos they could see the needles........
Last week a different position, about 2-3 miles SW off Ballard Down. Middle of nowhere but power boat after powerboat around the 35 - 45 ft mark went piling by, many within 50 yards. Ketttle was knocked off the stove, bait trays flew across the cockpit - all very messy. A quick look at the chart showed that we were on the main road from Poole to Cherbourg/Alderney and clearly the autopilots had been engaged........
Both groups were inconsiderate, both would probably be unaware they were being so (although the latter could hardly avoid realising the consequences of their actions but would have said something along the lines of - if they are out here in the middle of the sea they should be able to handle a few waves......(valid and flawred argument in one).
It is a sad state of affairs that few will inconvience themselves to be considerate to others even if they do understand the full implications of their actions.
 
Fully agree. I haven't used every make of autopilot but most have a "Dodge" button that allows you to use manual steering, avoid any obstacle, then go back to "Nav" and the pilot will steer back to the rhumb line that it was originally following. Autopiloters should do this to give more space to other boats
 
Seem to find all this agro is centered round the Solent. I wont go there anymore cos it's just a mad house. Pitty cos there are one or two noce places up there, but all seems spoilt by to many boats and people with bad attitudes. Pitty cos it does restrict my cruiseing ground these days cos it's hardly worth crossing Lyme bay just to go to Weymouth, then turn round again.

No one can force me to come here-----------

I've been too busy and too much abroad to look at this forum much recently but took a look today and was very disappointed by this whole posting and the attitudes shown. I am a both a "raggie" and a motorboater (although one of the slower types) and I have worked in the marine trade, coastal and inland, for over thirty years. Why should there be such a well of inconsideration and intolerance? I've experienced the inconsiderate motor boater, as have I experienced the inconsiderate sailing man (motorsailing but intent on sailing right of way, etc....) but surely in this ever overpopulated world we should accept that we have to be considerate. All this talk of a "solution" is crap: all it needs is consideration. Have you noticed how the roads are getting more considerate: there seems to be a backlash from all that road-rage stuff, certainly during the week when professional motorists are on the road. Lets hope we may see the same develop on the water, and perhaps the evolution of a general sense that we all have to share and consider, be we raggies, stinkboaters, racers or anglers.

The nonsense on this thread helps no-one. Maybe its time Kim got his big boots out and stamped on the subject for a while.

Apart from anything else tales of upset coffee etc are becoming boring.

Much as I hate to agree with anyone who thinks that bedsheets are a viable form of transportation Think about us little motor boats that don't do much over 6 knots (7 with a good wind, tide and a push) we get the same but do you lot care?
Saying that my last repair bill was caused by a wayfairer going up my arse. The excuse? They couldn't see through the bedsheet.

I've stayed out of this thread, and the one before, and the one before that, but enough is enough.

I think we can all agree there are wash problems and they affect most people afloat in busy waters. Motorboats are one major cause (but not the only one, yachts in harbours included) and not all skippers are as aware and/or as considerate as they should be. Anyone who has had to suffer my long-winded exhortations regarding the need to minimise wash and keep speed in check in all the right places on MBM cruises in the past will know my thoughts on that.

Firing on craft by using a catapult is not the most inventive solution I have ever heard. In fact I'm not particularly keen to see any forum here serve as an incitement to violence.

I would be keen to promote greater harmony between interests and, indeed, perhaps if it had not proven to be a busy summer for us in other ways I would have put some personal energy into a yacht and motorboat gathering to try and get some of these views aired face-to-face.

Meantime, I'm leaving this thread but locking it as I think it's all been said. Time to move on?
