Navigation will be limited to sextant plots on paper charts, communications via SSB and VHF radios, and music will be played on cassette tapes.

That means no high tech materials, computers, satellite systems (including phones and GPS), as well as mobile phones.

Entries are limited to ‘approved’ fibreglass production yachts designed prior to 1988, from 47ft (14.32m) to 66ft (20.11m) LOA

What will it cost to enter and campaign a competitive entry in the ORG?
A competitive ADVENTURE CLASS entry with 8-9 crew might start with a good NAUTOR SWAN 55 example on brokerage: 180,000 Euro
Refit using crew labour:* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *100,000 Euro
Entry fees:* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 25,000 Euro
Insurance and misc. costs:* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 20,000 Euro
Total Capital outlay:* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 325,000 Euro

(You could do it for less with a smaller entry)

So...

No 'Suhaili'.... no 'Lively Lady'.... no 'Joshua'.... no 'Matmut'.....


And perhaps, some real 'trad nav' this time, no yards of Dyneema smuggled aboard, and no sneaky 'weather routeing' via the radio ham networks? And real trad Fray Bentos pies?

I’ve got an eligible boat. I just need to not install the satC that I was not going to install anyway and rip out all the GPS sensors - a quick count suggests that there are three of them lurking over the chart table alone. The AIS has one, the VHF has one and unsurprisingly the plotter has one.

But seriously anyone with SSB is going to get weather advice. Better just allow it and have done.

TBH I am not sure that this event is offering something very different to the Clipper races.

No-one died doing the GGR.... although it was a close run thing at times. Is that about to change?
 
Nic 55' s did the early Whitbreads and have been pushed by service crews in some pretty tough conditions. One of the more ideal yachts for the adventure, I would say.

Changing the No. 2 Genoa in big winds for a smaller sail is the hardest thing I ever did sailing. However, we had the sort of skipper who ensured we got loadsa practice.......:ambivalence:

Isn't the smaller class named after the RN's Nic 55 Adventure? Still residing in Bristol by the river Avon I believe, where she's been for many years.
 
I don't really understand where €25,000 comes in as an entry fee. I suppose they might offer you weather routing—ah wait, no. Or support on your journey—ah wait, no—that's the point. Or a boat—once again, no.

Why restrict the boats so much, too—I don't really get that aspect. If somebody wants to do it in a more modern cruiser, given the other restrictions, why not? When we consider the range of boats in the original GGR, from a purpose-built junk to series production 30' cruisers and indeed the range of (then) modern multihulls, it seems rather boring to tie things down so much. It would be pleasing if, instead, the interested owners simply agreed to have a race, and pushed off... I'm sure media interest would be just about sufficient without a major PR operation, which I assume is the only thing your €25k buys you! Then again, the Achilles 24 definitely is a trifle small, and so perhaps I should wind my neck in and leave the big boat people to play...

The Facebook page is very informative and answers many of these q's and more, no need for puzzled speculation, also has videos with runners and riders, and Don or staff will answer queries..
The Cape Horn 22 is in the offing as well, Port Stanley, round the Horn then back to the FI .
( I'm hauling out for antifouling that week unfortunately..)
 
+ learning a bit about Don Mc, I just don't think the main motivation is piles of filthy lucre..

Yup - but there's likely a dollop of welcome self-promotion in there to please an old man's slide into dotage.

And that unctious voice - "Hello, Golden Globe...." - as wearisome as yon Russkie Meercat!
