was what the guardsman said about Waterloo. We had a similarly busy experience at Ouistreham at the weekend. It was the practice day for the start of the Figaro singlehanded race. I expect it would be really just like a normal day on the water for you Solent chaps but for a bumpkin like me being stuck in the middle of a fleet of a hundred 30 foot dinghies plus all the camp followers ( including navy and douanes) felt like Hyde Park Corner.
I remember discussions 20 years ago about the risk of collision in singlehanded racing - a 300 foot boat with the limited electronics available then could sink a merchant ship, let alone a trawler or yacht. The course for this race crosses the Channel twice and then Biscay twice, in four legs. Presumably these boats have fancy stuff that links radar to alarms?
The first leg finishes in Pompey - should be lots of razz ma taz with not many blazers in evidence.
