I think that was the mad Hastings surfer that had to be rescued.
The mad Hayling kitesurfers / windsurfers made it back to shore by themselves - honing their wave skills to be the best in the U.K. when it goes right, or getting slagged off as idiots if it goes wrong.

and according to the MAIL were rescued by the coastguard. I find that insulting to the brave crews of RNLI.

The Mail make it clear that it was the RNLI that rescued the surfer.
Coastguard would have tasked them with the rescue.

This storm has obviously been very severe in many parts of the country, but we have only had “yucky” rather than severe weather so far. The maximum gusts have been in the low 50s. Storm Brendan was significantly worse, as were a few storms in the Hebrides last year.
The weather models seem to be all over the place, but I think the next few days will be worse and this is likely to persist for a week or more. Stay safe everyone.
Currently we have little wind, but lots of small hail. Very pretty on the boat as a contrast to the aluminium. Photo from just a few minutes ago:

OOPs I was wrong all round it was on BBC News 24 where they called it a CG Boat. Nowt wrong with our CG, but it ain't them as gets salty.

But the surfer was actually picked up by the coastguard. The brave RNLI lads were called off after he rocked up ashore. The coxswain was on the radio earlier talking about it and what it's like to go 90 degrees woopsie in a rescue boat.

I know conditions were violent,& we cannot see the few seconds leading to it. But it makes one wonder why he allowed the boat to go broadside to that wave in the first place. How was he expecting to get someone out of the water, if he was getting in a situation where the boat was to be rolled 90 degrees. What would he have done with a crew on the deck trying to recover a casualty? All gung ho stuff, & we know that the boat is designed to take it, (Sybarite please note!!) but would the forum be confident with that cox?

Speaking as an expert armchair hero with DSO (distinguished slagging off) and bar, it does seem a bit odd. I imagine everyone was safely strapped in at the time, so no real risk, but I wouldn't be surprised if Words Were Had afterwards.

I do agree that it seemed odd and fairly close to the shore I believe. Hopefully lessons will be learnt and passed on to the other crews round the country.

It looks as if the RNLI boat had next to no water , and tried to gain some drive by taking the wave at an angle.
As mentioned , I don't think the boat could have rescued the casualty in the surf . I suppose they could have towed him out to deeper water if somehow he could have grabbed a line.
