The Master Builder, Buckler\'s Hard

Several people have asked what the newly re-opened Master Builder is like. We ate in the Pub yesterday and these are my conclusions,

The decor is similar to before and the only real changes they've made are to remove the servery in the lower Bar area and to replace the Beken photos on the walls with a load of prints (a pity, imho)

The beer seems OK - Guinness, Pedigree and Ringwood 49er on draft plus loads of cold, fizzy stuff. The Pedigree was in good nick but I can't vouch for the rest. You still have to queue for hours to buy a drink or order food when they're busy, as they were yesterday. According to the website they're still advertising for a Bar Manager and this could be the problem, as it didn't exactly seem a well-oiled machine. In fairness, they've only been open for a week.

The food was..... OK, I suppose. Mrs jhr said that her pollack and chips was nice and fresh, and the kids had sausages and chips (they were ecstatic because the MB never used to serve chips) which looked all right, but nothing special. I had salmon fishcake, which was stodgy, thick and, consequently, cold in the middle. Mrs jhr's wine arrived in a glass with someone else's lipstick on it. We didn't have any puddings, partly because I asked to open a tab when we ordered our main courses, to be told "we don't really do tabs" /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

So; on first impressions, not much better than before, in my view. I don't know what the restaurant is like but I hope it's improved. In fairness, I ought to give them some time to bed it all in, so we'll try again in a few weeks time. At the moment, however, it's still "could do better" in my view. A pity, because I really wanted it to be an improvement on the old regime, and it wouldn't have been difficult /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

Re: The Master Builder, Buckler\'s Hard

Sounds like its one to give a miss - as before. Whilst I appreciate your qualification on the fact it had only just opened my response would be "so what?". There is no excuse for dirty glasses, partially cold food and understaffing. I would have thought that they would not have opened without a Bar Manager and the appropriate staffing levels, could it be that the decision to open at Easter was more about cashing in on the bank holiday rush rather than giving paying customers a decent level of service?

Re: The Master Builder, Buckler\'s Hard

I doubt that it'll be better in the summer, when it really will be busy. I've always found it to be a mediochre experience. The cafe at the entrance to the museum (now doubling as the shop) is better (but not much).

My advice......load up with your favorite food and tinnies before going there....for what it's worth.

Re: The Master Builder, Buckler\'s Hard

I agree.

Never had a meal that lived up to its price tag in either in the pub or restaurant and I don't expect things to change much with new owners. They have a pretty captive audience with boaters and day trippers and I don't think they much care by the sounds of jhr's post.

We spent 8 weeks moored there a three or four years ago. It is a fantastic spot only marred by the lack of somewhere to walk to for a good meal although we did drive to a couple of pubs in the area that served great food.

Re: The Master Builder, Buckler\'s Hard

Dropped in the Saturday before last, at 8.00pm.

Two J's Crew: Can we order some food please?

Lass behind bar: Can't put orders through at the moment and there's a 90min wait for food.

Crew: What time do you finish serving?

Lass: 9.00pm, oooh, err.

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose!

Re: The Master Builder, Buckler\'s Hard

mmmmm we popped in 2 weeks ago. Would have stayed for a meal. But the service to others was appalling.

I have written them an email this afternoon, with this link.

Let's see what happens...............

Re: The Master Builder, Buckler\'s Hard

Follow up on my email to the MD, Christophe

Here is his full response(less his mobile number), reproduced with his permission to post in full.

"Dear Adrian,
Thank you for taking the trouble to email my manager at the Master Builders.
As you rightly say customer service is not only paramount in the hospitality industry but doubly so in these difficult times.

I have read the various comments on your website and am obviously most concerned about them. I also appreciate your goodwill for the hotel. As with the first few weeks of a new hotel we have experienced some operational issues which we do our utmost to remedy asap.

The main one has been the volume of business through the bar at peak times. You may be aware that we have started a bbq and bar in the gardens at weekends and daily from 1st June to the end of September. This is partly to offer a quicker and more cost effective alternative to the bar, but also to allay some of the pressure on what is a very small bar serving area. The bbq runs from 12noon to 7pm.

I was aware of the timing on food in the bar that one of your friends refers to a couple of saturdays ago. I have addressed this issue and hope that communication between bar and kitchen has improved now.

There will no doubt be times going forward when the wait for food will be longer than expected due to sheer volume, but I am very against going back to a pre packaged sandwich culture or to food that is not cooked from fresh. It becomes paramount for the communication from my front of house staff to the customer to be honest and helpful even at times when stress levels on both sides are high.

I do hope that you will come back to have a meal in the bar with our compliments and I would appreciate it if you could let me know when that will be so that if I am on site I can meet with you or if not my general manager can.
My mobile telephone number is *********** Again, thank you for taking the trouble to draw these issues to our attention."

Will report back when we visit.

Re: The Master Builder, Buckler\'s Hard

Well; it sounds like the MD is keen to try and tackle things, which is encouraging. We will probably be back in there before too long (we moor on the river, so we're a captive audience /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif) and will report back when we do.

Re: The Master Builder, Buckler\'s Hard

We popped in for lunch last Friday. Quite quiet, the staff were very cheery and the barbeques was delicious. Wine is a tad pricey though.

Mind you the sun was shining and we'd had a great run round from Southampton and the boat was running like a dream which tends to make the world a generally happy place.

Re: The Master Builder, Buckler\'s Hard

More than a short walk but if you can find your way to the Turfcutters in E-Boldre, you'l find some good local forest food... When we were moored at Beaulieu this was our local haunt. not trying to detract from the MB but a good alternative if you can get there that many from out of town wouldn't know about.

Good news if the MB has turned around though, be interesting to hear what happens...

Re: The Master Builder, Buckler\'s Hard

I do not think much has changed either. Called in on 20.06.09 to find BBQ only and restaurant full. No bar meals although food advertised as available on panels in the bar. Notice at BBQ says BBQ Fri and Sat. I asked staff about rest of week to be told BBQ but different menu. Bar staff said bar menu Sun to Thurs. Which is it? BBQ very basic and limited as to choice. Until I hear much better reports an overnight stay "up the Beaulieu" off my list again.

Delighted to hear the Turfcutters is still up to the mark. Groggy knees ruled out the walk.

By way of an update. Visited on Saturday to find the resaurant fully booked, no bar meals available so BBQ only. At 8pm they had run out of everything except burgers and sausages. No napkins, shortage of cutlery and chips served after we had finished our meals. The garden was too dark to see what we were eating so finished up in the bar. Fairly basic surroundings but made far worse by being filthy. Window sills, radiator tops under layers of dust and everything pointing to a very sloppy or non existent cleaning routine. Oh! and the Ringwood was off. It may well have been a busy weekend but was predicted well in advance and cleaning should be a regular feature!

This place always was dreadful; it takes quite some skill to knobble a place in such a prime location, but the surly staff, spectacularly awful food and " you're a captive market, pay up or p**s off " attitude - as with the harbour staff clambering all over cockpits in the early morning and bashing on hatches - manages to cross the whole place right off my list.

The only vaguely better option I've tried a few times in the past was to motor the inflatable right up the river to Beaulieu village - beware it's a long trip and even my 2hp Yamaha needed a supplementary gallon of fuel. I'd take a tiny toolkit and clothing to suit, it would take ages to get back if the engine died.

The pub in the village is still run by Montagu sadly, but is better than the MB ( I thought the Beken prints were the M.B's only saving grace ! ), did OK-not-a-bargain food at a leisurely pace last time I was there.

Worth doing the trip once, especially if gale-bound, the scenery and village are attractive and one can have a decent walk.

Update on the "decent walk". The footpath from Bucklers Hard to Beaulieu used to be very muddy after rain, but since my last visit here it has been surfaced right along the very muddy parts. It is a two mile walk to Beaulieu, and I don't think it is worth it except the little cafe in the village is rather good and there is a general store. I'll try E Boldre next time for a walk.

For what it is worth, their breakfasts have been very good, every time we have been there.

Their deluxe rooms look out over the river - nice if you booked the mooring right in front of the hotel - and comes with a "spare" room with 2 beds, ideal for the kids so you can enjoy a perfect night after a couple at sea... :-)

Bucklers Hard - still disappoints

We were a group of about 15 on Sunday and it was great they could accommodate us at short notice. However, the food really is disappointing for the high prices charged. I've met people who go there once a year in the hope it's improved. It hasn't. Best eat on board.

We popped along on Sunday also. However, we went for lunch and they had the barbecue going. It wasn't particularly cheap, but the burgers were very tasty and it was lovely to sit outside in the sun eating a burger and drinking some Pimms.

Went there on Wednesday evening to see (as many do) if it had improved.
Can't say it had.
Limited and expensive menu in the Yachtsman's bar. SWMBO is veggie and was reduced to Ham egg and chips with no ham. (No price reduction for this either). Dark and dismal bar too.
On the plus side, the beer was good and quite reasonably priced.
We'll go for a beer and back to eat on board next time.
Pity.
