If you like a mellow taste, I suggest you look at Glen Grant (only available in the UK normally if you go to the distellery). Their 4 year old (the shortest time a malt can be called malt0 is nice and smooth and is very light straw coloured. It is also about 6 quid a litre in Europe. But be flash and squeeze out a tenner on the 10 year old. I call it cows piss, and I am very fond of it.

If you like a seaweedy, peaty strong phenolic flavour(pnly for taste twisted twats like me) then an Islay brew, like Bruichladdich (any) are medium flavoured, or fool your friends with a fine blended whisky from the Jura end of the island, Bunnahabhain is very cheap and worthy.
Note the thread here is on drinkability at a reasonable price, rather than a 'look what I've got' type of thing.

If you want to go potty, then 60 quid will get you one of the 'Rare Malts' collection, which are from distilleries now shut. I have one from a place that is now a Safeways car park, so it ain't coming back. 2nd choice potty is Royal Salute from Chivas Brothers, who have blended whiskies to an art form.
Whatever you choose, avoid the designer Glenfiddich things like Madeira Oak matured etc.

And if you want to revisit Johnny Walker, I suggest you give the Red and Black labels a miss, and go for the 15year old Green label, or better, the eye wateringly expensive Blue Label. They will change your mind.
