The Landlord and Landlady of The Five Bells in Hessett, Suffolk

Afraid the launch had to be postponed once again, following the visit yesterday, one or two issues came up which needed an urgent response, hopefully the next visit will be less frustrating and we'll move forward a bit faster :(

Jim, the beer will indeed be 3d a pint or about that, if the plan goes together the way we see it, but you'll be buying through your ration card ;)

Joe, not sure about going to the lounge with this one yet, they may not have forgiven me for drift a thread yet, but I suppose I can blame you if the usual comments about advertising are made

Keith, don't worry mate, pink is definately not the way we're going. Louise and parents attacked the place yesterday and I can't believe the difference in the pic's so far. Found a gazebo hidden in bushes, on paving which was buried under inches of soil. Think we've even got a huge walnut tree in there, along with a pine tree judging by the cones on the grass. Loads more to do, but as the latest problems have been sorted out at least I can get the boat ready to travel

Yes indeed, and been looking into that so thanks for the link, it's reminded me of other stuff I need to sort out too. Should be interesting modifying the outbuilding to make a shop, but that'll be another boost too. Nice little open all hours allsorts shop, with old type sweets and anything else in demand, we hope

The whole point is you need nothing more than a loo, a standpipe for water, and a rubbish bin. Sorted.

Dave and Louise, sorry very late to this one but heartiest of congratulations and very best wishes for the new venture. We will be in the South West on the 31st so wont be able to make the opening but will pop up in September (we are having a long holiday this year :D) to make amends.

I'll let you off Alan :D

Quick update on this one, hope nobody minds

The planned launch on 31st July has hit a setback due to unforeseen problems, as the kitchen will not be in use straight away, so we aren't going to be able to do the food we want to do. Figures, but not a long term problem so all in good time

I'll let everyone know when the official launch is going to be, but in the meantime we will be open for liquid refreshment only, though we might be able to rustle up a light snack if required, from Wednesday 28th July

Hope to see some of you soon, and if anyone wants to arrange a get together for some time soon I can use that as ammunition to the council ;)

i know I'm a bit slow on this one, but best of luck Dave and Louise I knew you were looking for a pub but not all the way down there. Will have to call in some time.

Thanks Alex, and I'll look forward to pouring you a pint. Best route from up here is cross country, Kings Lynne, Thetford then A14 from Bury St Edmunds. Shorter than A1 A14 and more relaxing. Still a fair way to go but well worth the journey

My parents first met in The Five Bells during WWII when my Dad was serving as a medical corpsman at Rougham Air Base with the US Army Air Corps as I think it was called at the time. They were married in 1945 at St Ethelbert's (?) A few months later she came to the States to live. I was there in 1969 for three weeks and returned in 1991 and spent two weeks, both times staying with my Aunt Ena Clarke in Thurston. This is just a quick post for now as it's near 7:00 am Saturday here outside of Buffalo NY, not far from Niagara Falls. I found this page by using "Hesset, Suffolk" as the search phrase. It has been so long that I hadn't recalled there were two 'T's in Hessett. It was good to find you!

ooh, I was having a weird deja vu there for a moment.... until I read the thread down the bottom!

Had a bit of that myself when this popped to the top, however, as the news is open on Trip Advisor, I thought it might be an idea to let those on here know that we have closed the restaurant. So please DO NOT go there in anticipation of getting what we've worked hard for two years to build. Can't go into details for legal reasons, but I shall be announcing something of a surprise soon. Have a Duvely day folks ;)

Holy sh*t, Dave, I've just looked at the website ; what's happened ? Guess you will be able to tell us in due course, but I hope you both are OK.

Look after yourselves. (and take a backup copy of your contacts list and suppliers.....)
