The Landlord and Landlady of The Five Bells in Hessett, Suffolk

The brewery advised that they can supply what I want, so they have their first challenge from the ECF in sourcing Duvel, can't be doing with this tourist label

Cider is currently Aspall's so that's good, none of them archers firing arrows around in my pub :D

Guest ale will also be a regular, but which one will always be a surprise ;)

Just waiting for Nathan to pick up his phone and Simon to get in touch with his saw and we should be well sorted

For obvious reasons I don't think it's a good idea for me to organise a meeting, but Jim and Neil are well practiced at it ;)

WD, looking forward to hearing the CD, Louise will be there all day tomorrow but I'm back at the bunker to earn cash to pay for all of this, then launching on Sunday before I get a chance to drink some of my own beer

Not sure I'll be doing Black Sheep though, I is Welsh after all :o

Brilliant News...VuVuzala noise blows loudly

Dave and Louise

That is brilliant news and glad you got them there "Bells"
will be down asap and get the profits for the year drunk in a weekend
Dave send me a pm with your mobile (not the one you,ve given to your Mum :))

Cheers Joe

Congratulations Dave and Louise,

I remember you telling me of your aspirations at the Pirate do last year and I'm really pleased that it has come to fruition.
Sadly, I don't come your way very often, so will probably not contribute to the profits, but I wish you success.

Have you gone mad?
You'll be getting nose bleeds moving to that altitude, and people will want to talk to you without saying "me duck" at the end of every sentence.

My wife was brought up in a pub and said she would divorce me if I ever wanted to take a pub. Now there's a temptation. Seriously, all the best for the future.
George

Booking system will be in operation soon after we open, so if someone wanted to sort out a meeting that's no problem, think Neil or Jim may have already mentioned that, so just to clarify, there's plenty of space in the grounds for caravans and tents, even a few hideaway parts if kids wanted to camp with adventure in mind

Congrats all round. Shame about the impact it'll have on your sailing calendar though!

I think it's a great idea to have an ECF shingdig there and - unless someone else is already putting things in motion - I'd be happy to help pull together and organise if it's genuinely a goer from Sixpence's point of view and if others (and Wingdiver) are keen.

mmmmmm Beer

I think we should stamp our mark on the place before then

Do you think we will be safe to camp there as I,ve seen Dave in his deliverance (Spalding)dungerees and he has been known to listen to banjo moozik in the past :)

Thanks to everyone for your positive responses, it's very reassuring to read them after all the work we've been putting in over the past few days, hence my absence from here, been able to find time for pm's to various people but this is the first chance I've had to catch up on the thread :o

Regarding concerns over our boating future, rest assured, we're not giving it up, and thanks to Clive we hope to launch this weekend, final yes/no being tomorrow after work, then we'll just have to go sailing when everyone else is working instead of eating and drinking at our place. Not much different to shift work really, only we don't get any weekends off rather than having some working and some not, so we're used to that

As for ECF events I have indeed been in communication with FullCircle via Mrs Circle, and it seems our calendar matches quite nicely as the evening in question was already on our plans. I'll go into more detail later, when we're fully organised, but for now I can say that the plan will involve an evening with light but relative entertainment, and nourishment, and will be a formal evening including a strict dress code of black tie (which I don't think Joe has :D ) and should be a very enjoyable evening for all

If Lisa or anyone else wants to organise anything else I'm always interested in hearing from you, and with luck we'll get it right for everyone. So over to you if you want to arrange something, and we'll look forward to any event you want to arrange, it would definately help keep the business alive, so thanks again

Current plans include a celebration of the anniversary of the end of The Battle of Britain, which was seventy years ago, this year. If we manage to organise that in time we hope to have everything in place to make The Five Bells in Hessett, look like it was it was still back in 1940, but again, I'm not going into too much detail until I've been in touch with various people and organisations, but it would be great to have a small army camp in the grounds, complete with anti aircraft guns. Plenty of other ideas too, some aimed at becoming the social hub for the community, some aimed at providing a service for it, so lots to work on yet

As said, we hope to launch in time for a party on 31st July, but with latest developments meaning we already have a delay in building work, it may be a drinks only venue to start with. Got a big outdoor barbecue but that needs a shelter building over it before I can use that properly, and a cook or chef capable of running it before we could charge for food from it. Unless someone wants to get in with a booking in the early stages where we can supply the liquid and loan the barbecue to them if they fancy cooking for a group ;)

Doug, we are indeed very close to you, and quite a few others are either local or pass close by often, so no excuse not to call in then, including those from oop North who fancy a trip that's actually quite straight forward

Anyway, more work to do if we're going to open in time, just wanted to say thanks for your support, it's been great reading the replies, and I'll look forward to hearing from anyone that would like to organise an event. Jim and Neil often take on the organising but they've frequently asked for others to jump in and sort something out, no permission needed from anyone so just go ahead and arrange something, see who's interested, then book the venue of choice ;)

A flypast by the BBMF will be diffacult to organise at this late stage in the game unlike 1940 however I can do a barbie for as many as you like ,with all profits to you of course
It may be a disappointment to ye Ol' englishmen as ye may be able to tell the difference between the meat being served(eg not volcanic lumps of black meat)
If only as I'll be being eaten by miges in Scotland on that date
I also think you should go global wit this thread and invite the great unwashed via the Lounge

Cheers Joe

ps you should be able to use all your skills and take a 2010 pub and make it look like a 1940's

Looks like a lovely place, Dave. Hope all goes well.

Have just googled Hessett to figure out exactly where it is. Came across a picture of the Five Bells painted pink. Noooooo! That's so wrong. Don't do it! :D :)
