I carry all that stuff and next to the bent coat hanger I have about 4 meters of curtain wire, the stuff net curtains hang on - with an eye in the end its magic for getting cables around the bilges. oh yes and a corkscrew and bottle opener so I can take time out and consider the problem from a different perspective!

Hells bells! I thought I carried a lot!

I must reveal my ignorance. What is a toroid set? I feel that I should have one.

I think the person who suggested it meant a set of various sized clip on ferrites one clips on cables to reduce rf interference (but they are cubes normally, not toroids), but am not sure.

I never worked out what a "[no thanks] file" was either, but that must have been suggested too /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif.

It seems some people live on a HOUSE BOAT, with all that tool.
Get yourself a wife who knows and can do everything, and you'r out of trouble. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: leatherman

Good thread and thanks for your suggestions.

I think I just go through my exisiting tool kit, brush off the rust, oil everything and replace the ammo box with a wooden one! A pair of those big-boys wire cutters look as though they might be worth haveing though . . .

Cheers!

Re: list of tools

what rubbish. You could sink several boats and still not have enuf tools. You *may* have enuf tools if you can walk into a chandlers and realise that they don't have things that you do have, whereas you have everything they have. obviously this means you are compltely sorted with regard to power tools and extension cables, as well as painty things, a compressor, and other unfathomable things.

toroids

Oh, a "toroid" relates to spanners: it's a special shape for a fastener like a bolt or a cap screw and needs the appropriate special shaped male allen key, or femal socket to undo it, or tighten it.

Instead of being pure hexagon-shaped, a "toroid" bolt (or cap screw) although still hexgon-like has more curves, and becos of thesde curves gives a more positive grip of the bolt/fastener. Germans manufacturer's lovem because of this purity - the socket can never slip. The shape is hexagonal, but with curves so there's more grip and less chance of slip.

bradawl lunacy

ah, but we've got the catchall "woodworking tools" which included an electic drill and loads of drillbits.

Anyway, for chirssakes it's a boat isn't it - we can't go completely bonkers and dangerously upset the delicate balance of the vessel with what you must admit is an EXCESSIVE quantity of bradawls, surely? Sheesh!

Anyway i spect yerv only got two now...

Quite obvious what a [no thanks] file is when pointed out /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Thanks.

To those who have commented on the completeness or otherwise of the list, the list was very carefully crafted to meet that fine balance between the boat being a boat and the boat being a mobile workshop, and whether it floats or sinks. In the end, if anything is missing, the superglue will solve most things even if only to glue something over the top of the broken/not working thingie so's that it can't be seen anymore.

Not sure about why the 4 pairs of overalls though - whether that means one must carry 4 peep's on board as well for fixing things or if when fixing things one has to get very dirty.

You've missed out the most important one though. No shaped charges to scuttle the boat in case of being boarded?

That would solve all those issues with problematic officials asking for original not photocopied papers.

Not sure how local officals would react to you scuttling a boat in a busy channel or marina, so the fines might be greater, so not a real saving, and I have a vague idea that the insurance company may not look kindly on this

You are hardly going to fill out a claim form post scuttling your ship.

Please fill out in your own words how the accident occoured....

Actually, scrub that, that couple on the ARC a couple of years ago scuttled when they could not fix the rudder, with their insurance companies blessing, I was happy with my new premium after reading that!
