Re: Out of interest

Would they not recommend compliance with the ISAF Offshore Special Regulations whether racing or not, on this particular point? That is, they have to be connected with 3m of floating line.

How about this point of view

Leaving aside that it would appear to be the advice of some bodies to connect the horseshoe to the dan buoy with a 3m length of floating line so that the dan buoy - the idea being that the dan-bouy marks the approx position of the MoB and drifts with the tide and the horseshoe is therefore nearby to aid the MoB.

Could this arguement not be just a plausible.

The horseshoe is laible to be blown away by the wind as it skates across the water surface. By connecting it to the dan buoy, it must therefore pull the dan buoy out of position to some extent. So a better proposition may be to have 2 horseshoes - both free of the danbuoy.

The man goes overboard - deploy the simple horseshoe immediately (and hopefully reasonably close to the MoB). Deploy the danbuoy with the line floating free (the MoB may be able to grab this) to mark the position whilst stopping the boat. Make you way back to the dan buoy, locate the MoB and deploy the second horseshoe directly and accurately to the MoB if necessary.

Obviously, both arguements make some assumption of ideal numbers of crew etc. I only pose this proposition as a possibility.

Any thoughts?
