Why the rocks?

This is why it is called the rocks.

Because there are rocks there!
One needs to be careful when drying out there not to sit down on one.
We managed not to by about 3 feet on Saturday.

If you are going to do this the best spot is by the buoy where the smack moors in line with the last notice board. ( up river end of the beach)
Rock free at the moment.
Sandy gravel at least to the neap low water line.

I presume you mean coprolite. I had a book once which said that this was collected from this beach and have looked for it without success, though I have some sharks' gnashers. My impression is that it is harder to find fossils since the beach has eroded.
