The cost of boating

Well I use it lots and the more I read here, the better I feel.

Runabout 17ft with Suzuki 100. Used every other weekend this season, with 5 people on board including SWMBO. So 20 weekends...

£1280 and that included launching, fuel, insurance, dry mooring, yacht club fees, repairs & spares. Even at my humble end of the scale boating is expensive!

Not far off, for a 30 footer, I guess. I think we spent around £10-11k this year (less with appreciation - yes, the brokers have a couple for 7-10k more than we paid last year).

Flip side is we spent maybe 35+ days afloat, including weekends and about three weeks solid in July/August.

Pro-rata, the cost's not bad. Figure out how much a family of four can blow on two weeks in the sun...

Ahem it's been a bad year £wise

The usual service antifoul mooring repairs mallarky £10k
Lorry to France £5.5k
Remove-refit radar arch etc £1k
Passerelle needed in France £4k
Bimini (1.2k. It was a nice bimini, honest. Gulp)
New faster RIB with console and steering £5k
Aircon £7k
Sunbathing cushions ansd stuff )£.6k
Think I'd better stop now. Ah, but divide by 3!

I dont count depreciation appreciation. I only care about cash, not accounting.

Frightening me to death!!

Are you lot for real?? You are frightening me half to death! If MY other half reads this (look at MY user profile guys) HE will have a fit. I was the one who talked him into it and this is our first boat. At the rate you lot are going it is also going to be our last - assuming we actually manage to 'stay afloat' financially for our first year!!

Berthing, £2400
Fuel, £1200
Antifoul, varnish, paint etc. £1500
Haul out/in, £500
Sail repairs, £200
Outboard/boat service, £250
Insurance, £2000
Filters, oil, belts etc, £200
New genny, £3500
Water, £50
Watermaker (SH) £700
Sextant, £200
Odds and sods £1000

Total £13700 approx.

Now thats for a year in commision, cruising from Lagos, to the balleares and on to barcelona including moorings in barce until may. No depreciation, no loan no new genny, watermaker or sextant next year I hope!

Re: Frightening me to death!!

Don't worry, they all like to brag about how much they have lavished on there toys - it's a man thing.

Also you gota take this in context, while £15-20K may well be the true cost of a keeping brand new fourty footer you'll get away with much less for a 26 foot cruisers int. Last year we had a Bayliner 2556 which cost - £1100 marina mooring + £300 engine service + £30 of petrol each time we went to her kept the tanks full. It didn't need an antifoul cos it was done the year before and I left it in the water through the winter so no lifts. OK so we bought new life jackets, a new camper cover and some other stuff but that was more want than need. spent every second weekend on it and then sold it for what I paid for it. Cheep as chips!

I think you will find that this boating melarkey is as expensive or cheap as you want to make it. Brevardo aside of course.

ins 350
fuel 300
freshwater tank 50.00
asst volvo bits n pieces 200

Re: Frightening me to death!!

Um forgot to mention assorted damage repairs, bent stantions, gouged gel coat crunched radar arch.

B.....y hell where did all that wash come from.
Er looks like a B....m to me.

Re: Frightening me to death!!

call it 3000 a year all in

depreciation = 0 - I am not selling
capital cost = 0 - the horse I was going to put the money on lost
oh and add the £15 a year I am now being required to spend on RSPB membership...................following last weekend.

This is where a good thing about orkneys comes in:
they are the cheapest boats to run and so little can go wrong (kiss of death).
On the negative, i have had to sleep on deck twice this year when away because they arent the most accomodatiing!!!!
