The cost of boating

A mate of mine was working out the cost of his boating over the past year. Totting up what the mooring costs, finance on the loan, servicing, repairs, fuel, new bits he's bought etc, he's come up with the thick end of £15K. And this for a 30 foot diesel stinkie

Now that's a lotta boating you might say.

And you'd be right.

But then he worked out that he's actually only used his boat for 6 hours this year. The rest of the time it's just sat there gently emptying his wallet.

Now some would say he's a bit of a pillock to spend all that money and not use the boat, others would say how he spends his dosh is entirely up to him.

But what do you lot reckon?

And what has your boating cost you this year? Go on, be honest. How much have you REALLY spent? No, not the figure you tell SWMBO, but the real one that you lie awake at night thinking about.

Having sold my boat, and at a tiny profit, I reckon this year has cost me just under a grand. But then the marina has forgotten to charge me for my moorings and also didn't bill me for two lift outs and back ins, so really I'm quids in. Well so far until they cotton on.

Come on be honest. Promise I won't tell your other half.

oooh!... wonder who your talking about here.......anyway, my costs

Mooring £300
Fuel £370ish so far
Insurance £230
Repairs £200
Hours used, lost count at 60 back in august. Still boating so the fuel cost will still rise and if it get laid up then you'll have to add the bit extra over the normal sevicing cost. So call it around about £1500 this year.

Yeah! I know its running rough, but your lucky its running at all!!

Sorely tempted by a S*****e F33.

But we'll wait and see after Xmas when the sellers are (hopefully) getting desperate and the prices soften.

mooring £1200
crane out and mech repairs £400.
fuel £300

Dogged by mechanical troubles whole season! Miles travelled about 15 at most. hence fuel tank still 3/4 full.

Looking forward to a mechanical rebuild over winter and a better season next year or I am gonna sell it.

I was working this out the other day, I reckon berthing, servicing, insurance, fuel etc., comes to about £3,500, but doesn't include depreciation. I have used about £1,000 of petrol this year.

I also counted up I used the boat 60 days this year, and done about 1200 miles, so that works out about £60 a day, or £3 a mile.

Also put about 120hrs on the engine, so that's an average speed of 10mph. Seems low, but then I suppose there's all the time spent with engine ticking over, or in speed limited waters.

As a comparison, what amount of fuel do you use for a trip like Poole to Yarmouth I.O.W. I take it you cruise on a trip like that at around the 20 knot mark.

Poole to Yarmouth, that's about 25 miles, use about 25 litres of petrol. Yeh 20 knots a comfortable speed, and about 3,000 rpm.

A litre a mile at 20 knots? You sure? Or are you trying to sell it, hence the fuel consumption suddenly gets loads better? Thought the original post said what's the TRUE cost, not the SWMBO cost.

No that's about right, a 19ft boat with a 3 litre Mercruiser, I use about a litre a mile. A bit less in a flat calm, more if it's rough. Also more when not planing, at 10 knots in the harbour, only about 3/4 mile per litre. I don't obey any She!

Yeah but 20 quid in a whip lasts longer than 20 quid in fuel.....well the effects do! Especialy when your drinking the high octane stuff!

Where can you get a whip for £20. Oh! You mean a whip ROUND.

No all those things not taken into account, they're all extras. You've gotta live!

New (to me) RIB this year.

£400k in servicing costs
£400 odd in fuel (I do roughly a litre a mile at 35kts on a Yam 200 HPDI o/b)
£270 insurance
Free trailer storage at a mates factory
£1000 odd in depreciation.
£Dunno in interest on the loan
£600 odd on new plotter / Navionics chip
Took ownership in May. 'Bout 50 hrs boating since then til early July when the true cost of boating for me turned out to be a slipped disc and 2 mths flat on my back!

May be time to hang up my drysuit and take up something more sedentary. Yottin' perhaps?!
