I have never seen a video like this it is unbelievable. He has to stop because one day we are not going to hear anything from him. Watching this on a huge smart TV is too real!

It’s pretty rough, and I wouldn’t fancy it - but to me it doesn’t look particularly exceptional in terms of such videos.

As NBJS appears to be his business, he needs to go when others would stay - although i presume the other boat that left at the same time did so for fun, not because they were suicidal.

Or am I missing something. - is your post some new form of click bait and I’ve just boosted it?

He’s been back and forth so knew he way back in to port. He’s got lots of confidence in his boat. Still not sure even he was enjoying it that much at the time. Be nice to experiance it for a couple of minuets but rather not for 15 odd hours of darkness. Still it was either that or he had to leave the boat for some time.

I agree not exceptional and given a choice and alternative you would choose not to go. It does however put into perspective and question those that claim to make similar passage and to windward in smaller yachts fanciful to say the least.

Not really. Some people are just crazy.
And remember he's doing it alone, a hard slog to windward is always a hard slog, but its a lot easier when you have some backup so you get some proper rest off watch.

Here's someone doing it upwind (mostly) across the atlantic in their 60s.

Having pals who have sailed the Southern Ocean, their usual comment is, 'just another day at the office'.
If you're going downwind with the right amount of sail up, it's (usually) fine. Needs to be a well found boat though. Interesting observation about the combination of current and gale - that adds an unwelcome dimension.

He must have been worried - that's the first time I've ever seen him put the washboard in. Even in his 'encountering storm force 10' video from 2020, at 18:23 you could clearly see he was surfing downwind in 50 knots with the companionway completely wide open...

Yes, I think the prospect of the potential conditions as he approached the coast was preying on him. Also sea-sickness, water leak with diesel in it, cockpit drains barely coping...

He was definitely glad it was over!

Hats off to Erik, and one can only imagine the hours spent editing footage.

It was interesting to see how he stores the washboard loose in the cockpit. Not sure I'd do that tbh, perhaps some sort of tether would help.

Anyway, remarkable.

Nearly everything you mentioned, especially the bailing out the bilge has been there since day one with Eriks videos. So I don't know if he just can't be bothered to fix it, or leaves it in for dramatic effect.

That’s Erik. Did you see the state of his standing rigging when the mast was unstepped?. He also goes thru cruising chutes like no tomorrow. Hey just goes to show he’s human like we all are. Not everyone is perfect with attention to detail.

I like the fact his videos highlight his own weakneses.

Yeah, I noticed that too: made me 'suck my teeth' a bit when he said he'd never taken the mast down in twenty-one years of ownership.

He's had the same boat for a long time now, so I guess he's very attached to it.

But I do think that he could make these (mostly downwind) passages, with a lot less stress and a lot more comfort with a newer hull shape, something that doesn't roll as much down wind, surfs a bit more readily, beamier with bigger decks to move around on etc.

Ridiculous and it’s a big rig on it too. The bottle screws were knackered. One sail from loosing the lot. Even I take my mast down and check it.

This is exactly why I admire him. He's not afraid to admit his human side. He likes to push himself, that's good, but admits when he's gone too far - like this last trip. Also admits when he's been an idiot, when he fell asleep and hit the rocks amongst other things.
At least he gets out there and gives us some stunning footage of places I would love to get to.
