You can catch octopus and squid there and when the tide is out you can pick large cockles, walk over to the other side and pick clams. Octopus needs to softened before eating the Greeks throw it against rocks on the boat use a cutting board and hammer. To get sand out of the cockles put them in a net bag and lower them over side for one tide. You can't beat fresh food.

Also if fishing when sailing I used two rods with different coloured swimming lures, different fish take different coloured lures, if you don't catch anything change the colours. An example is we were sailing off the Spanish coast heading to Gibraltar using a red and white lure and a blue and yellow lure all the mackerel took the blue and yellow lure.

If you are fishing around Olhão or anywhere else in Portugal make sure you have the appropriate licenses. Otherwise it could prove to be an expensive expedition.

I had no idea I needed a licence but there didn't seem to be anybody around to enforce it.

You do.

They do.

You can also get one from a multibanco machine if you have a portuguese bank account and debit card. Also some knowledge of portuguese language helps.

We can see the patrol boat from Portimao most weeks and it does inspect all fishing boats in the area. I have also been checked by the police rib.

I never saw a patrol boat or a police RIB in Olhau Lagoons because from your post they are interested in fishing boats offshore not yachts in lagoons, by the way we spent months there fishing every day.

Assuming you mean the Ria Formosa, our mooring is next to one of the PM moorings, other ribs are moored nearer to town and they have more boats in the small boat marina, a couple of which look just like day fishing boats, with no PM markings.

There's lots of police activity around the Ria and if you can't produce fishing license then they start on safety gear inspections looking to issue more tickets, which can be €250 for each offence.
