Do a sea survival course. The best £ 85 I've ever spent. Not only do you get to fire off a liferaft, but you get to play with it too.

Do you know the correct method for boarding one from the water? Can you tell the difference between someone who is hypothermic or drowning? It matters, believe me, get the treatment wrong and you will kill them.

One of the most useful aspects of the course is knowing what to look for when you choose a liferaft for hire or purchase.

Every sailor ought to do this course, the RYA or the Coastguard, can reccomend centres in your area.
