The Best Fish and Chippery

We stopped off in Ballycastle this summer and tried J.A & K.D Mortons chippy. They are a family firm who catch their own fish, selling it through their own fishmongers and their chippy. Their boats, chippy and wet fish shop are all close together and very near the marina. Best I've ever had! Certainly beats my local in Emsworth by a very wide margin - unless you like your batter thick and soggy! The best here is served in the Bluebell Inn.

I've never had ' thick & soggy ' stuff from the Emsworth chippie; the snag with the Bluebell is it will cost a great deal more and the seating is rather limited, booking only at busy times - it is the best pub in town though !

About 3 quid more and worth every penny!

Forsooth, sir.. I have to disagree... any fule no the Coalie is beyond compare! :D

Well I prefer being sneered at by local fishermen - FFS don't wear yottie gear - to the clientele of the Coalie, who I will not describe for security reasons. :)

The Lord Raglan used to be great when Les and Trish ( friends of a girlfriend ) had it, but the good value - ie cheap - nosh seems to be gone now.

My Dad has a keen divining sense for good fish & chips, much like ' The Force ' and it usually manages to override my power steering if going to & from the boat past the Emsworth chippie when it's open.

The best fish and chips I have ever had, bar none, and by a long, long way was in Bo'ness. I think the place was Corvi's, which is a very short walk away from the usable outer section of Bo'ness docks. Perhaps some of the Forth gang could say whether it's a practical place to visit?

The Chip Box in Aberystwyth (either the one in Eastgate or the Penparcau branch) were always brlliant when we kept our boat in Aber' so that's our vote for the UK. And if we're allowed a vote for Ireland, it would go to the Crazy Crab in Kilmore Quay (it's a sit down place rather than a takeaway but probably the best I've ever had!)

Afraid I don't know about Ms Seddon but i can ask around if you like .........
It's wonderfully quiet now the tourists have gone home for the summer and we frequently go for a wander around the town when it's not raining!

Gerry,

as you're in or a regular at Brixham, a question please as I get to see repeats of ' Fish Town ' in the mornings, ( please tell me someone shot the poetic narrator ) I discovered the Maritime Inn as the best pub for quiet reflective book reading types like myself when there over a decade ago, is Ms Seddon still there ?

I'm surprised no one has suggested the fish & chip restaurant/ chippy a couple of hundred yards from the fish quay at Tynemouth.
Probably the canny Geordies want it to remain a secret, as it gets busy enough (always a good sign) now.

I should mention the chippy at the top of the hill at Town Quay Falmouth, Harbour lights. Quality much improved in latter years, and the award winning pub underneath, The Front, welcomes you and your food, and sells our local beers, Chough brewery. A plug:

Of course the over-riding conclusion to draw from this thread is that everyone likes them different.
I don't like them cooked in oil, and don't like "pale" chips I don't like wet batter under the crisp outer on the fish. I like haddock. And really as you can only get patties in the East Riding, it has to be somewhere there.

+1 when i lived in North Shields it was excellent with fish straight off the boats

As mentioned before;
Anstruther
Tobermory pier, and Portree. Also Mr Pia's in Inverary and some good chippies in Largs & Oban

Not a fishing port but walking distance for anyone with a boat at fareham town quay is the relatively-new-to-town whistlers (sit down as well as takeaway) :

In an earlier thread:

I expressed cynicism about the NFFF fish and chip quality award (that this place has) but was put right by Cheery that it is respected in the industry. Tried Whistlers a couple of weeks ago and whilst the chips are more traditional British chip shop fare rather than triple-cooked Belgian frippery the offerings were undoubtedly better than anything else I've had in the Fareham area in the past 30-odd years.
