the belgians are right to fine us for red diesel says my Euro MP

They should stop dying marine diesel here, it would solve the problems in one swoop.

Indeed. I know the arguements about stopping people using it in their cars, but there must be other ways. The red diesel that is sold to us is high sulphur, isn't it? These days it is not legal to use high sulphur diesel in road vehicles, so can't the HMRC find a simple roadside check to distinguish between the two types without having to resort to colour? Road vehicle diesel also has to have the bio-additives these days, doesn't it? There have to be ways of testing for them.

They do not specifically dye marine diesel.
All diesel arrives at the local distribution depot white-before the advent of high and low sulphur there was just the one type-and anything for use off the public highway on land or sea was dyed red.Now a little more complicated-the white is low sulphur for road use BUT now there is red low sulphur for land based off road engines;red high sulphur for marine use and central heating(diesel is more efficient than keroscene in large central heating systems) and yet another central heating variety(suspect some form of low sulphur)
Becomes even more complicated when you consider the average tanker often is carrying all varieties in seperate sub tanks.
Not as easy as it sounds as whilst they can purge the delivery pipe of red diesel into a central heating tank being filled with keroscene they cannot purge it into a white diesel tank because of risk of red marker getting into the tank(white can be purged into red or keroscene). There have been instances where the wrong fuel has been offloaded by mistake-bad enough when there were just white and red.
How much simpler it would be if they dyed the road fuel and left the rest white or as in Newzealand keep it all white and operate a fuel tax road licence. You buy a fuel tax disc for say 10,000 kilometers which has to vaidate against your mileometer and your annual WOF(MOT)
By the way do not thing that it is illegal to use white high sulphur diesel in your car(not that you can get it in UK) its just its more likely that you will be breaking emmission control regulations and would fail an MOT
Interestingly enough both high and low sulphur red diesel bulk retails at same price-about 73p/litre.

IMO.... your Euro MP is a self promoting bar steward suckling on the Euro teat.....

Now that the hammer has fallen and the Euro will soon be a thing of the past, its time to tell the Brussels vampires to place their regulations where the sun does not shine.:D

long past time. the whole thing has been an undemocratic, corrupt stitch-up from the outset.

Surely the only thing any bunch of politicians is good at is fiddling their expenses? The practice seems to have extended to some Civil Servants and Police as well. As for having bonuses for just doing their job properly, ridiculous.

Some of them, e.g. The head of the Rural Payments Agency, have had bonuses for not doing their jobs properly. I consider that to be corruption

Presumably these are entitled to reduced duty diesel, so the Belgians have no objection to it being red.

Pete

I assume their entitlement to red diesel is because they belong to a charter company that is VAT registered.

So is it possible/legal to form a not for profit company that can be registered to own a number of yachts for use of the shareholders/directors?

Nothing to do with whether a firm is VAT registered. Leaving aside dyed diesel in leisure craft, its only legitimate use is in fishing boats and agricultural machinery. That is where the dispute originates - prior to the Directive individual states had varying policies towards leisure usage, and the directive is designed to prohibit its use. Read the RYA material for a more detailed description of the problem.
