The Apple iPad

It appears not. It does have a compass (whoopey doo)

Although it has Bluetooth, I suspect they will have made plugging in an external Bluetooth GPS as difficult as it is for the (2nd Gen) iPhone

It looks as if the 3G upmarket models may well have "proper" GPS built in.

If the 3G slot is unlocked and will take any SIM the iPad could replace my laptop plus broadband dongle, and therefore do email and web weather forecasts up to 30 mls offshore and do GPS navigation anywhere.

Depending upon the price of the software charts this could be one to watch!

I'm willing to bet that Navionics will not sell the software for the current peanuts when it's running on something which competes with real chartplotters.

IPad can download and use any existing Apple app, so unless they just put the price up, Navionics will have to contend with just having a mass market :)

$499

Gob smacked.

If it comes with a 24 hour battery life - and ofcourse if it could be linked with ALL the applications thats come with the APP Store it will be an All rounder Love it.

$499 is a bargain because my Ipod touch was $269 about a year ago in Fort Lauderdale with some extras and I use it EVERY day.

500 dollars (don't try to fool me with the old 99 trick) is for the basic model. This will absolutely not have any sort of proper GPS functionality. The price then goes up to over $800 for the better class of iFad <----see what I did there? ;)

It has no usb connectivity BTW.

Anyone who has an iPhone knows how well the battery lasts when you start to actually use the damn thing (you want Bluetooth & 3G at the same time?! Start your stopwatch now!). But up to 10 hours is what they are saying now.

Look before you jump.

No No No ... don't u see - what you do is wait a couple of years ... by which time they'll have improved on the model and brought out one that isn't just a Fad (yes I did see what you did there!) ...
That's what I did with my iPhone and I don't regret it - as nice as it would've been to have it 2 years ago I'd've had to replace it if I wanted the GPS & faster processor ...

The cheapest iBook is 650 quid, which is fantastic value.

The iPod Touch is one of the most handy little bits of traveling kit ever, 150 quid - also stunning value.

The idea of a device which is lighter than the laptop but with a usable screen size is just perfect and I am amazed that the entry level price is 400 quid.

It is a long time since I bought anything other than entry level in a range, Apple stuff included. Suffice to say I have no regrets or yearnings for having held out for the next one up.

"Every which way I look, the sensible option is a dedicated plotter for about £300-£500."

Yerbut a dedicated plotter won't let you do your emails, pick up weather forecasts, store your pictures, play your music, add your wisdom pearls to ybw.com, etc.

I agree, but I'm not sure I want all that confined to the wheel in a waterproof case when I'm sailing. I want the plotter at the wheel, and the "laptop/Netbook/iPad free to be used anywhere else on the boat.

i.e. if the Ipad is being used as a plotter at the wheel, I want something available to be used by me, or others, elsewhere. So I would have to have another iPad, or a netbook, or a laptop, to carry out their normal functions.

I also wonder how much a waterproof case, that could be securely attached on deck, would be for an iPad. Waterproof camera cases range from about £115, (rare), to upwards of £200, (more usual), and they are somewhat clunky. Hard to see a case for an iPad being any different. The extra cost of making it work as an on deck plotter may be better put towards a dedicated plotter.

Just my opinion, but I dont think Lowrance et al have much to fear from the Ipad.

More pictures of the iPad have been released.

Er -
Email receiving is background (unless you tell it not too)
Play Music is background (just start the ipod app - many apps are building in the ability to play your music too)
Add your pearls of wisdom to YBW.com, Pick up Forecasts & storing pictures is interactive - so can only be done whilst you're controlling the phone ...

And the iPad won't let you do more than one of these at a time, because, like the iPhone, it won't multitask.

Yours must be broken then, mine does this without any trouble at all:

Playing music,
Telling me if I have an email,
Showing me YBW, RIB.net and the latest weather (all in windows that can be flicked between easily).

All at once.

I go sailing to get away from all that rubbish.

Good on you. :)

Our last boat was a minimum, no fixed plotter, certainly no music or other entertainment on board. Just the elements, it was wonderful.

Realities of work are not compatible with a minimum boat though, if a customer is waiting for their new tillerpilot to turn up so they can fit it at the weekend and the Posty has not delivered it the customer wants to know that I will be able to pick up my emails - even if I am on the boat at the time. Either that or I just stay in the shop and never go boating, which is clearly bonkers. :D

For some of us being able to pick up messages while out and about, or enjoying a hobby, is pretty useful. Certainly better all round than 9-5 customer service hours.
