Re: \'That\'s not a stemhead fitting\'

was it 316?

I don't know, it just caught my eye on my travels last weekend.
It appeared to be a ferro boat with this enormous SS sheath at the bow.

Too many boats have the plate and cheeks without proper vertical restraint, relying on under-deck pads to keep it down and not pull oput of deck.

The older fittings with the vertical tang running down the bow are to be preferred to some of the 'tin-plate' crap seen on even big boats and ones that should know better.

My previous boat - Snapdragon - when I replaced the stemhead - having had the furling gera pull out !! - I designed my own with the vertical tangs etc. Even the yard doing the work commented on how more secure and better the Luther one was ....

But this is a whole other ball-game and I must say not so unusual .... I have seen encapsulated bows - but not as large !!

What's wrong with it?

To be honest, I'm glad there are other people who take my attitude to vessel strength - if you cant lift the boat using a fitting, it ain't strong nuff.

Regards

Richard.

If that's a ferro boat; then I'd be awfully worried about what is lurking behind that stainless!

There can be pretty big sideways loads on the vertical plate with the forestay attached. If it was my boat I'd be inclined to weld some little triangular braces from the sides of the vertical plate to the face of the horizontal plate. Stainless is famous for not having a very good fatigue life - especially where it has been welded and I'd be a little worried about it cracking at the root of the weld after a while.
