Watch out for Wood Slick on Sussex and Kent Coast
18 November 2002

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has warned the public on the East Sussex and Kent Coast to beware of large quantities of timber washing ashore on local beaches.

A member of the public alerted the Dover Coastguard to the large quantities of timber washing on local beaches last week. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency are unsure the source of the timber but is it thought that it may have come from a vessel called the “Bothnia Stone” which suffered from engine failure and developed a 40 degree list whilst halfway between France and the UK. During rescue operations some of the vessel’s timber cargo had to be jettisoned into the sea to correct the list and allow the vessel to be towed.

Members of the public are advised that all timber recoveries, no matter how big or small, must, by law, be reported to the Receiver of Wreck at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency on tel: 023 8032 9476

Alison Kentuck, Deputy Receiver of Wreck said:

“ Members of the public are not committing an offence by recovering timber from the beaches, provided that its recovery is reported to the Receiver of Wreck. This is a simple process which benefits both owner and finder by allowing the legal owner of the timber to have their property returned if so desired and ensuring that legitimate salvors receive a salvage award if appropriate.”

Sorry if you've all seen it
