Thank St Greta for saving us

Absolutely fine. But dont grizzle when you get left behind by the overwhelming majority! :encouragement:

Absolutely no chance of that. I was building PC's when they were nothing but a twinkle in their father's eye.

Just because sensible people know better than to join the lemmings, doesn't mean we don't know what's going on. :smile-new:

So what did you think of the instagram posts from Team Malizia across the Atlantic? useful or not?

Im afraid its the old gits that are way outta step as typified by comments like that. And, looking at other posters, you are not alone. But you are in a dwindling minority.

The impact on the young generation, who lets face it, have got to clean the mess up, is huge. Thats the audience, my old whinger. As Ive said over and again, drag yo asss over to facebook, instagram, twitter. You can read all about Team Malizias science programme, the tweets about the Amazon fires, plus everything you moan about.

Its one thing to be under informed. At least demonstrating that in public allows others to publicise where you can find out what happens in the real world.

And I bet you can get 4g on the Clapham Omnibus........

OOI, do the people burning the Amazon refrain from destroying the environment on account of the chattering on Twatter?
Judging by the number of fires... I guess not. So her campaigning is not having an effect.

I don't think they have the first clue. The human population explosion is the primary reason we are in this mess. Sort it and the problem is mostly dealt with.
What do they do instead, they titivate the masses on social media, others do it with gimmicks trying to disrupt life. It's all just disjointed hysteria, they all carefully avoid grasping the nettle. STOP BREEDING like flies...

Here are just some of the sixty thousand plastic tents left behind at Reading Festival by an audience of, overwhelmingly, young people.

Of course something needs done, and if (when) we oldies don't do it, young people will have too. However, young people are far more accustomed than us to having the latest phone, the latest throwaway fashion from Primark, a nice new car on PCH, regular long-haul holidays and so on. To attempt a drag back to on-topic - We sail old boats; they fly to Croatia to sail something new. Or fly to Gibraltar to take sailing courses when perfectly good ones are available by train on the Solent.

So while I agree that there is a great deal of passion being expressed about environmental damage at the moment, I am afraid - because I think the concern is entirely justified - that what part of it isn't a short term fad will fade away when those currently espousing it realise the implications for them.

For what it's worth, I have done a good deal of environmental education with school-age children over the years and the contradiction between their genuine concern and their desire for the unsustainable has always been an issue.

How, do you, know what the "young generation" are thinking, check your mirror, you, are one of those "old gits".
That portrait you hid in the attic ain't working.

Just because you have the physiology of a gnat, don't assume the rest of us have any similarity.

What a stupid statement.

Could you please sod off to the lounge if all you're going to do is slag off other people, here's not the place.

Well, you do raise a couple of interesting things.

First why would you say campaining is not having any effect? Do you think it would be instsnt, like a video game? Because it seem s Brazil has been embarrassed by all the publicity on the global stage and is putting a sixty day ban on the clearances. Not a solution, but a start. Publicity works.

Secondly, by refering to social media as 'twatter' you use the common technique of trying to devalue something that you either dont understand, or frightens you. I have no answer for you there, its up to you.

I think the answer is obvious..... I take the trouble to find out. Ive got kids and grandkids. I listen to them. I sail with people of lots of nationalities and ages. I work in the tourist busines and meet thousands of people.

As Ive suggested, take some time out of your busy life to look at social media and see what people think. You may also be aware of its dark side too where its proven that elections and referendums can be manipulated. So do please conduct your research with an open mind and be careful not to get knee jerked into half truths and heresay from the weirdos.... it can make you look slightly foolish on forums if you are not careful. :encouragement:

In pursuit of green credentials personally, I can report that a three hour sail this morning resulted in using mebbe half a pint of diesel. We are consuming some electric back on board my own boat now as we have a fan blowing coz its quite warm. Gonna go for a swim later but the marina pool is unheated. So I reckon Im up today. ;)

I absolutely agree that concerns are rising. The trick is going to be in convincing people that a world without a lot of things they take for granted will be better than the alternative.

We all have kids & grandkids, which just confirms that you are one of the "old gits" you were moaning about earlier.
Also, " and meet thousands of people", is about as believable as the moon is made of cheese. Get real for once, you skipper a yacht, not a bloody cruise liner.

You have absolutely no idea what I skipper!!!! Which adds to the other hugely growing list of things you seem keen to demonstrate to the world you dont know.

Edam or Red Liecester, me old hole digger? ;)

What is St Greta doing about the fires in the Amazon?

We in Europe are already well aware of the effects of climate change.. She is campaigning in the wrong place. and telling the wrong people to panic.

So what exactly is your problem with this young lady campaigning very effectively for something she, and millions of others, feel strongly about.
She has mobilised a huge amount of publicity and awareness of the issues, and motivated hundreds of thousands of her own generation. She has been invited to meet and discuss the issue with an amazing number of senior politicians and influencers worldwide.

Perhaps she has achieved more in 3-4 years, in any sphere of world influence, than most of the grumpy old codgers on here have done in their lifetimes. And indeed, you make a good point - perhaps she has done at least as much good as many who have been beatified in the past, so perhaps you should nominate her to your local bishop?
