Eve'n all, Think I have found the boat for me! after 6 months of looking at everysingle boat for sale in the solent, I have finally found the one (on the Thames)
PROBLEM: It is at Windsor (I don't want to pay to have it lorried down to the solent) so being 'fairly' new to boating i.e not been up Thames, would it be difficult to take it along there and roughly how long would it take to get out the River, and any problems with height under bridges (13,6ft) e.t.c
Question:Why would someon buy a boat, put the biggest engines you can fit in the thing and use it to poodle up and down a river?
Comments and insults welcomed with open arms

What boat is it, and whats the Air draught, i think the only problem with bridges you will have is hammersmith on the tideway. As for the big engines, small genitalia, me ive got a dirty great V12 supercharged and turbo jobby!

Few things to watch out for:

a) cost of trucking/craning not always that much more expensive than the diesel and other incidentals involved in doing the trip - depends on size of boat and whether it is in fine fettle (Thames Estuary not the easiest place to deal with breakdowns);

b) if planning to move over the winter, watch out for lock closure programme.

First off I am pleased you have found a boat. Secondly, the boat will have difficulty with Windsor (Eton) Bridge as I think from memory it is 12' 6" (Boatone - comment please?) Thirdly many boats based on the Thames frequently go to sea. Indeed I spend from May to September at Sea. Hence the bigger engines. Fourthly apart from being cheaper mooring on the Thames if you are a social animal the social life on the Thames is way way ahead anything you will fgind on the Sewerlent. I know I was moored on the Solent for 20 years.

Sounds like another job for "Action Matts and the A Team". Bit wary of the trip though this time of year, BarryD's got all the waypoints form Ramsgate and to get there just keep going down river;-)

Re: here we go again!

Unofficial boat moving department calling. What boat is it? Izzit that f36 with woopah edc 44 wahoo oar-grinders erm engines?

1. Buy some beers (this hereafter known as The Fee)
2. Arrange date for me/whoever to come round and move boat. You need two boaty peeps really for this sort of trip, so if u are really boaty you only need one person, else two peeps or more if massive boat.
3. Worry. Perhaps rearrange a bit cos crap weather. Wife usually backs out by now.
4. Jolly boat moving takes place.
5. Um. that's it. You need a friendly uncle or guilty wife to pick up from wherever.

DaveS, where's that gps? I urgently need it to throw overboard.

Oh, and I think you'll be okay under the bridges, think hammersmith the low one at under 4m, so long as not springy high tide it'll be fine.

Byron - our leader - has called and boatone is here with the info requested........
Windsor Bridge is according to one of my trusty tomes 13' 2" clearance. Not sure what water level this refers to but there you go.......................
Anyway Byron, how can you possibly know he's going to have trouble with Windsor Bridge? He hasnt even told us what the bl**dy boat is yet - could be a twin mercruiser'd kayak for all we know - no, on second thoughts then he'd have trouble with lock cills........
Still, sort of agree about the social life and who's he to criticise folks like me with big(ish) engines that like being on the river. Bit grumpy tonite I'm afraid - boat was lifted this am so thats that for a few months now. Still, its got a lovely clean b*m........first time I've seen it !
Note for Moose - dont be frightened to ask if I can be of help - I'm only an hour or so from Windsor - what about sea (sorry)river trials?
Oh yeah..what is it.........?

Oh b*ll*x, why dont I read things carefully......yep, he'll definitely have a problem with Windsor bridge unless he amputates something up top. 'Course we could arrange for those nice lads from Eton to do the extra ballast trick like wot they used to do at Osney for a copper or two.
Message for matts - nope, I havent got an oracle, its a P32 (now with clean b*m). Yep, tthe pics arrived safely, nmassive files but then didnt expect anything else....jfm is sending movies and will put whole lot up on super enhanced and unexpurgated webpages - prob 2morrow. BTW, have you guys noticed I bagged a more universal domain name?

Moose having done something similiar (in a smaller craft) its honours even to go by sea or by land. By land you pays your money and get to where you want to go. By water you get to find out a heck a lot about your boat and will meet some great people. Also lots will fall off your boat and you will find out how she handles in various sea states.

What is the boat and where do you intend to moor her?

If you do want to move it by road the costs for the transport will be around £300-400 + vat for this boat let me know if you need some contact numbers but they'll nearly all be busy from next week until the end of January moving boats for the LBS to and fro..

Craneage? will be around £200-£250 at each end

Re: I\'ll help you!

Don't think the old folk have been all that helpful with their posts so ill try. Byron's right, you need to watch out for Eton Bridge (just duck) and possibly Chertsey Bridge, depends on water level (whack it through). Roughly from Shepperton to Brighton it took us two days. Shepperton to Ramsgate, Ramsgate to Brighton. It won't be any different for you. Its a good laugh as well if your in good company, recomend it. Ohh 1 piece of advise, leave all northeners at home (no offence intended to any on forum).
