Had the pleasure of taking a trip on the Tilbury-Gravesend ferry, the DUCHESS at the weekend after quite a few years, the Gravesend side terminates on a all-tide pontoon which is an extension of the old town pier which has had a great makeover and allows immediate access to the town which is a very interesting and historic town to visit. The inside of the pontoon is available for short term stay, and i'm told is very secure and would make a good base point for Thames exploration, the length of the pontoon should iron out the wash from the many tugs etc passing and I would think would make a fairly peaceful stay. Previously the only way to stay in the area was to either anchor, could give a sometimes rock/roll night, or to use Gravesend marina, only available I believe one hour or so either side of HW. Don't know about charges but a phone call would ascertain that . Very interesting---

That's right, you call the Gravesend Marina to book the Town Pier pontoon. See www.londonrivermoorings.com. It's a high pontoon so set your fenders high. Can be a little bouncy in a smaller boat with the river traffic.
I do agree that the town is very interesting to visit. It gets a bad press, perhaps the name is a bit off-putting!
