But what is all this "the HMS London" nonsense? "The London" is fine. "HMS London" at least makes sense. But "THE His Majesty's Ship London"? Cloth ears.

Reminds me of the old Rowhedge yacht hand who was taken to see the Coliseum in Rome on a crew excursion laid on by the owner when the yacht was in the Bay of Naples.

He was unimpressed. When asked what he thought of it he is said to have replied that it was "all very fine, but it needs a tidy bit doing to it to set it to rights."
 
Did seem a bit unlikely to me, but elf n safety records back then were a bit shocking. Someone would have to be particularly thick to do that though.
