Idly looking at Visit Thames this afternoon, I came across this item:-
Shiplake Lock scoops top place in River Thames awards
24 December 2010
Shiplake Lock has scooped top place for the’ Best Kept Lock’ on the River Thames, after hundreds of people voted in the Environment Agency’s 2010 Thames Waterways Awards. Howard Miatt, assistant lock keeper at Teddington Lock, has topped the list for the ‘Say it with a Smile’ customer service award.
“Chatting with the boaters and passers-by who come through Teddington Lock is one of the highlights of my job”, said Howard. “It’s always nice to be recognised for something you enjoy.”
Romney Lock came second and Teddington third in the Best Kept Lock award, while Laurence Richards (relief lock keeper) and Richard Hawkins (temporary relief) came second and third in the customer service award.
Votes were entered into a prize draw for each award and winners were randomly chosen. Bianca Shead was delighted to win an overnight stay at the Compleat Angler in Marlow for her vote in the customer service award. "I very much enjoy spending time on and near Britain's waterways - particularly the River Thames - and was very pleased to nominate the lock keeper at Teddington for the ‘Say it with a Smile’ award," said Bianca. "He always takes time to ask about our boat, where we're going, and is always very helpful and friendly".
It's always nice to see that the efforts of front line staff are noted and praised (ant that I voted for a winner).
The locks used to be a blaze of colour in the past, and it's sad to see that diminish over recent years, partly due to Elfin Safety and lack of funds.
Shiplake is always a pleasure to see - Geoff Horsnell makes a huge effort to keep it shipshape and colourful.
Well done, everybody.
(I assume Bianca above is a "connected person" ? )
