Tesco's Reading

So am I going to be ok cruising down the Thames in July 2017 with the red ensign at the stern and the Lincolnshire flag beside the mast head light?

Or will we be birched?

No! Flogging maybe,:encouragement: with Cat-o-nine tails for maximum effect!

You cant beat an argument on Flags. I am going to join the Cruising Association so i can get a better flag. Surprised the RYA never offered it too.

Some smart alec lockie will come along and tell me why in a minute. Aint that right Keith?
The RYA, even though it administers permits for the MOD, doesn't have an MOD warrant for a special ensign. I hope that's not too smart alec for you.

The situation seems totally daft, as having renovated the moorings they don't seem to want them used!

I have just received this message from friends of mine who inspected the notices.

'In case you are not aware, there is now an immediate charge of £9.50 for mooring or ‘remaining stationary’ in the area, and if you are caught there not having ‘pre-paid’ the £9.50, the fine is £100. The Council may be persuaded to introduce a short period of free time for shoppers (or coffee drinkers) if enough people contact them. Even if you don’t contact them, do be aware of the new regulations!

Council Telephone number 0118 9373797.

Better still send a message to the parks department - Julian.allum@reading.gov.uk and pedro.borralho@reading.gov.uk.

Although the moorings are now much improved it does seem like yet another lost facility.

Here's a pic of one of the five signs stretched out along the length of the approx. 100 meter mooring.

Totally backwards in my opinion; I moor over the river at Thames & Kennet, but often call in to grab food/drink/fuel or some local friends who've bought it all for me! I've got a picture on my camera of the whole mooring; it's a great improvement but it's not being used - will upload when I get it off the card.

£9.50 overnight is understandable, but prohibitive to stop for a quick trip to Tesco. I couldn't see any cameras (had a pretty good look). I'd like to think that this was put in without thinking the situation through, rather than as an active deterrent against any stopping. I'd happily even pay a couple of pounds for half an hour.

This will become the norm. A hardcore of white people with dreadlocks and bag of coal on their boat roofs will bugger the whole river up for the rest of us, who will have to pay a tenner just to leave our expensive home moorings and spend our hard earned money in a restaurant and/or pub. I'd like to know how they intend to post a fine to a liveaboard without a boat name, a licence or a postal address.

We went past on Thursday andnoticed thatthe DE signs were prolifi, but limited to the repaired stretch. There were other signs (of reasonable quality) implying that 'the trees' were not part of the chargeable section. Given that the DE signs were spaced at 10m intervals it seems reasonable to assume that their contract only applies to the 'boardwalk' ?

We intend to land on our retrurn downstream to discover furether. If I'm correct - it would seem a reasonable solution (until the Cmres take over that part)
The whole of Reading's river fromt, past the bridges nd parks are now plastered with DE signs - but appear to be ignored by the 'residents'...

As we are in the vicinity curious to know if it would be safe to moor up to shop at Tesco next week without having to pay a silly amount?

I'd be surprised if anyone could give you a definitive answer. The 'resident's' seem to moor in the trees with impunity and on our recent trip we saw several boats approach and moor on the repaired boardwalk with no apparent attack from concealed rangers. We stopped for 15 minutes to see the extent of the signs, those in the trees towards Kennet Mouth have been defaced with little reaction from the 'authorities', whilst those on the repaired section had not - perhaps that says something...

You might consider mooring "in the trees" and leaving someone onboard to remonstrate with Authority should such appear
OR
if you're bothered moor a the very end of the downstream lock layby - ask the Lockie for permission - and walk back along the towpath - it's not that far.

I'm all for certainty - which we'll not get - so boat defensively.....

Emailed this Julian Allan 3 times now and no response. Does anyone know what the actual realtime situation is yet. Thanks

At last a reply from the elusive one! Anyone is welcome to moor here and the fee is £9 up to 24hrs. So perhaps to avoid capture whilst re victualling at Tesco, make a
list, drop off a crew member and hover whilst they get the beer and wine in.

Does anyone know if you can moor up (for a short stay), opposite Caversham boat hire and the bowls club in Reading?
only reason I ask, is there is an Aldi plus other retail shops and the end of the road there, so maybe a good alternative to stopping at Tescos and risking a fine.

Seems a bit steep, imo! Will Tesco be charging to park your car when shopping?
They could of course issue your ticket then refund you at the check out if your shop is over say £20!:encouragement:

The moorings belong to Reading council, not Tesco. The situation is clearly a nightmare and needs action but nobody seems to want to recognise legitimate boaters.

Went past there couple of weeks ago and it was empty, I'm certainly not going to risk it.
Also Uri Gellers moorings now have a confusing collection of different signs and instructions, the dredded (fake?) green TVM signs and private signs saying to call various mobiles.
Have to say if I am stopping at a official EA 24hr mooring and only staying 24hrs I have no intention of registering with TVM.
The river is being ruined for legit boaters.

My Management does a "big shop" at Reading and takes at least an hour doing that. I can't see myself hovering for that length of time!

No - the whole of Reading is covered with the dreaded DE signs on both sides of the river in the town and all the way up past Purley

You don't have to register with TVM - just call on the phone line on the appropriate sign

I have replied to said being " seeking clarification" . Not holding my breath, but will update if any sensible reply is forthcoming. My suspicion of course, is yes, its £9 for 24 mins or 24 hours.
I tried !
