Yeah! Not just turbos! I used to work for a comapny that made (normally aspirated) sports cars. We specified Mobil 1 when it first came out and ended up having to rebuild a load of engines which were drinking oil having failed to bed their rings in! Even Mobil ended up telling us to use their ordinary mineral oil for the first 12,000 miles after that!

(by the way my Pug looks like doing the same. Used half a litre of oil in the first 6000 miles and none since).

Cheap oils ....BAD

The basic rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for. If you want quality sometime you have to pay for it. Sometimes you can get a good deal for that product.

If you have a application that costs £15,000 you would not put Tescos oil in there would you? I know that I would want the best i could posibally get. And then know that i was protecting my engine with the best. This means that there will be less downtime, smoother running and longer service time. All this for just a few more pounds each year on the oil.

Hi Lemain again,

Agreed what you say, go by your own ideas from the dipstick on how the oil is carbonised and the general feel of it. Has not left me down in 25 years and with a fair few engine overhauls / surveys underneath our belt. Numbers and codes I have not looked up yet only I'm sure I could be quoteing codes for ever. See if you can can get a dipstick for viscosity from Mobil and that is one of the main things you have to worry about,

Patrick
