Am thinking of bringing down a Trader 50 for a couple of weeks or so in June this year. Will be house based in Salcombe but looking to use the boat for various trips. Anyone got or know of a marina berth for a 50 footer in that general area...assume Plymouth, Salcombe or Dartmouth. Pontoon berth preferred as I've got small kids.

Shouldn't have much trouble in Mayflower, or Plymouth Yacht Haven, i've not known them turn boats away. It's a slow drive to Plymouth from Salcombe though, so i'd keep it on a bouy in Salcombe, and buy, rent or borrow a decent tender that you feel is safe for the kids. You can leave the tender on the buoy when you take the boat out for the day. Alternative is to use the water taxi to get to and from the boat, still loads easier than driving to Plymouth

Thanks so far....riding to a bouy in Salcombe is my fallback and I moored a yacht at PYH for several years so am familiar with the set up. I guess I was hoping for either a mooring swap or someone who may know someone whos got a mooring. Salcombe is pretty hefty on mooring fees and its not convenient when taking small kids to and fro as SWMBO gets kittens whenever they go near a dinghy!!

ok - we're happy with dinghys ship to beach, but the idea of lugging all our gear plus kids on a daily basis by dinghy in Salcombe is messy and harbour traffic in salcombe is actually dangerous. I have almost been run down by the yawl racers on several occasions as they dont give a toss about others, and the shher volumes of users in Summer mean a long dinghy ride with kids plus gear is best avoided.Water taxis are not that reliable either - I have a house in salcombe so know it well - hence the idea of trying to find a pontoon mooring as a base

Agree, driving to Plymouth is a PITA. Actually driving to anywhere from Salcombe is the same, though June is infinitely better than late July-Aug. I suspect that the marina at Kingswear will take even longer to get to than QAB/Sutton Harbour/Yacht Haven etc in Plymouth.

Unless the OP has a huge stroke of luck and finds out that someone will be away for a couple of weeks, then I can't see him succeeding.

One other thought would be to talk to Winters Marine who have the long pontoons opposite the Saltstone. They may know of one of their customers who will be away cruising at a given time.
