Temple and Hurley closures

You guys still didn't solve my being stuck between a lock and a hard place...... ;)

I earlier mentioned lock moorings and it occurs to me that may not be such a bad idea. There's the upper pool at Hurley, for instance. That might be worth investigating. Or even the lay byes above Hurley and below Temple? As the EA are "creating" the problem - and you have paid your licence fee - a special deal on their moorings for the period of the closure might be worth asking about ?

Hmm - good suggestion, but the OP wants home comforts as well = 'leccy so that restricts the options as well.

Hurley is going to have some large kit around - if that used on Shiplake last year is anything to go by; lock gates are heavy and there'll be tugs, barges and such, which of course will take up the layby...

The moorings by the house weir are sheltered, no 'leccy but in "home waters" for the OP.

OTOH Shiplake does have 'leccy and a pleasant enough mooring next to the rubbish barge.

Not where he wanted but might be of interest to others?

ps: Had a word with them 'as knows, who indicate that laybys are always kept clear for use either by EA boats in transit or whatever, or more importantly if (when) the River goes on Red Boards - for craft to shelter, as a safe haven. (I didn't think of that one!).
Electric power points are on very short term anyway as each card only runs for 24 hours; they are intended for the sudden rush of electric boats (my joke) for overnight charging.

Yeah, but those two locks are going to be shut, aren't they, so there won't be any boats waiting to get thru or sheltering from red boards for the duration!
And there are some lock moorings which have electricity as part of the overnight charge - Old Windsor springs to mind.
My response was more to help Lady Gay rather than the OP.

Presume you are thinking electric charging points here rather than an overnight mooring with leccy available?

And, just for the record, all ideas floated by me are only that - ideas which might be worth checking out and a bit of thinking 'outside the box' that might just strike lucky. Anyways, I get the feeling peeps are more interested in belabouring the point re double closure rather than really in need of a practical place to stay for a few weeks.

As I am currently boatless its not a problem i need to worry about !

ah, but you're trying to counter official policy with logic..

Me too my comments are for general interest. I didn't know that inclusive 'leccy was an offer. I must have spoken to the wrong lockies. The User's guide only refers to 'leccy as charging points, and all I've ever noticed was one sad solitary bollard at several locks - the Old Windsor ones are on the weir stream? Haven't been up there for some time.

Sorry about the last point, I've a spare dinghy you can borrow...

It must be the popularity of this forum that has raised the profile?
Last year Marlow and Hurley were closed and not a complaint from anyone, the year before, something similar; perhaps Bray and Marsh.

This year at least there is a "Christmas break" which hasn't been available for a while as P.Power said the then works although not continuous would involve moving plant out of the way - said to be costly.

You're One BoatLess and I'm Locked in - but the weather will likely be cold and wet so roll on 2011.

BTW, as I've posted before, the fee we pay EA is for registration and not use, because everyone has a right of navigation. Unfortunately, "rights" don't confer any usability of the object per se

Absolutely true BUT..... however they describe the reason for taking our hard earned, as far as I'm concerned the fact that they do makes us CUSTOMERS !!!!

Ergo the concept of Customer Service raises its head and being HELPFUL to customers is a pretty important part of retaining them and making them happy. :D

Just imagine a Notice to Users that said something like:

"We are sorry that our winter maintenance plans include a period in November when both Hurley and Temple locks will be closed simultaneously. If any of our licensed river users that will be trapped between the locks for this period are particularly inconvenienced and would like to contact us, we may be able to offer short term mooring arrangements above or below the affected stretch although this may involve an agreed payment."

Ok..... I know ..... Dream On Tone !!!

Oh BoatLessOne; you're absolutely right, if Customers are truly valued in Utopia you might be considered.

But this is the UK. We are Valued Customers until we have signed the contract and paid as it were, then......

Would BT care if the lost your business, or t-mobile, or EDF or Dairy Crest.

Nah, they don't corporately give a poo; there's always the next customer. Then suddenly sales disappear and they wonder why. (I know, change the logo). Thinks - what a spiffing idea for one for the Thames region; a tower crane rampant over a pair of lock gates, with a queue of customers draped like laurel leaves. The motto is " Nemo hac praeteribit".

Somebody please draw up the heraldic bit - could be the Thames Forum flag..

Now there is one boating organisation which does just what you are suggesting; makes winter moorings available; and for all I know goes and tells customers individually as well as posting everything on the web.

and the organisations is?

Couldn't agree more - if the 'regular forum users' wish to josh each other - do it somewhere else.

Firstly there was very little of that on this thread at all.

Those of us who use the forum for info don't need the rubbish.

Then don't ask the regular forum users for advice.

Not like this is a paid information service. You ask for informal advice on the internet, you live with that advice being delivered informally. There is lots of good advice on this thread for the OP.
