So - in the interests of helping you give advice to numptees in the future, there seems to have been one idiot check that you didn't ask me about...
The glow plug / alarm test rocker switch is also used to 'acknowledge' an alarm - which then stops the sound but the relevant light keeps flashing. When the alarm originally went off I didn't ever push it to acknowledge the alarm - I just (eventually) disconnected it! Then whenever I've reconnected it the alarm has sounded - not realising I had to acknowledge it to stop it! So I did that Friday, and I've sailed this weekend, and it all seems to be working fine...
So apologies for not realising, but I've certainly learnt a lot from your advice and suggestions about alarms and sensors, I will be getting an exhaust alarm, and I will be taking off the exhaust elbow for a thorough inspection and clean. I won't be spending £400 for a new control unit, or trying to make my own!
Thanks again.
