Temperature Alarm

I have just returned from a trip out on a friends boat and the temperate alarm went off on one of the engines as we increased to maximum revs. The temperature on both engines was reading 85 degrees C at the time. The engines are Tamd41's 200hp, and we shut down that engine, and restarted a few minutes later and off it went again, it only stopped when the temperature guage dropped back to 80 degrees. What temp should they be "sounding" at and any ideas on how to check the sensor?
( Thats assuming of course thats the problem )

I had the same problem with one of my AD41's last month, I watched things very carefully but it hasn't done it since. I'll watch your replies to see what pos up.

My engine is a Mermaid and runs at a similar temp. The alarm is set to go off at 99C, but it helps not to have accidentally disconnected one of the sensors and only spot it when the temp reached 120C!! Luckily this was spotted pretty quickly and no lasting damage done, phew.

Hmmm. Mine read about ninty deg as quite normal. Think you need to look at the buzzer.

I posted the same question on http://boatdiesel.com/ and had the following reply:
"Temp switches set 97c in manifold & 95c in thermostat housing. Not the same switches. "
I presume that either sensor can set off the alarm, I have asked the question on that forum. I guess we have a faulty sensor and can find it by a process of elimination. I will post any further info I get or if I fix the fault

Try locating the senders on both the engines. Make up a pair of mini jump leads (always useful to keep for similar jobs) and swap the leads off one sender on to the other. if same thing happens, but on the other engine sender is faulty. Then change sender!

Try locating the temperature senders on both engines. make up a set of mini jump leads (always good to have for similar wire tracing jobs) Using the mini jump leads, swap the wires of the senders with each other. If the same fault occurs but with the other engine now . the engine sender is faulty. change sender.

Finally fixed problem, it was the temperature alarm sender. We took it out and checked in water coming to the boil and it operated at 88 degrees. Bought new one ( £48 from Volvo ) and this 'worked' at 97 degrees. These things seem to break down over time or so I was told.
