Temp. fit of transducer.

So, i want to make sure this new transducer works through the hull before fully fitting it.What material can i use that won't make a mess and i can move about to find a good position? Would plasticine or putty or playdough work?

Use plumbers mate. Once position is decided the plumbers mate can be used to make a dam to pour resin tinto for a permanent solution.

Might try that. Not sure if i'm brave enough to resin it in though.Another £50 if it goes wrong!

After taking advice from these forums I fitted a fishfinder transducer ( transom type ) inside the hull with standard silicone sealant - works a treat and easily moved if necessary.

Not heard of this being done with the conventional disc on a threaded rod type transducers though.

To find the best location, half fill a plastic bag with water, wet the area you want to test and slide the bag with transducer submerged to get a reading, the wet floor is eliminate any air between the transducer, plastic bag and the hull. Look for bags with seam on the bottom.

When fixing take great care not to trap any air or the thing won't work.

You could also mount the transducer in a box or cylinder so that it can swing and give the correct depth when heeled. just top the container up with a bit of oil, almost any type works.

I used sikaflex as a temporary fixing. Realized that I might as well leave it in place when I saw the sounder was working better on this boat with a temporary fix than on previous with an elaboratly manufactured oil bath. (A big 'transom fix' sounder that comes with a Garmin 's' series plotter)

'Cos if the seam's at the top all the water falls out the bottom.
