In anticipation of a wet summer I was thinking of fitting a TV. Is it worth it.Does anyone have any experience of reception in places like Oban, Tobermory, Ullapool. What type of ariel is best. I don't want a permanent installation and was thinking of an omnidirectional hoisted up the mast. Assume swinging to anchor most of the time.

I have WIN Tv installed on my laptop it works really well if you can connect with the transmitter i would imagine that Oban would be in range as i think transmitters are located on a hillside on Mull facing Oban. I havn't tried it yet in that area but western areas in the Lake District work well

I fitted a small lcd digital TV last year. I'm not as far North as you but around the Clyde and out west as far up as Crinan it worked really well. I use a normal uni direction arial mounted on a telescopic pole when I need it and I put it away when I don't. All the different transmitters transmit on different frequencies so you need to retune each time you are near to a new transmitter. You can get a map location here http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/broadcasting/guidance/tech-guidance/transmaps/ so you know where to point the aerial. Also some transmit on the vertical plane and some horizontal. My aerial is easily changed to suit.

Thanks for the link. I had no idea the west coast was so well covered. Presumably the uni directional ariel will work better than an omni. Is it practicable when anchored?

That sounds like a joke to those of us living round here, but it has improved recently with the switch to digital, but everyone I know in this village is still on satellite, including the liveaboards.

No!

The cooncil telly in Argyll is sh 1 t and that's only the reception- the content is even worse so I can't imagine why you'd even consider it.

Learn to read instead, or failing that down load all you want to watch in the form of movies or what ever the techy equivalent of telly progz is.

Or look out the window.....

Or better still, go to the pub and talk to people if the telly on there is not to your liking.

usually works ok as the boat pretty much points in the one direction most of the time. In my experience most of the places I visited last year were so close to the transmitters it didn't matter if the boat was swinging around quite a bit. genarally there was nothing between us and the transmitter.

It's dark at night so not a lot to see and the pubs are only open so long. last year middle of summer they shouted last orders in the pub at Crinan at 1045pm

We have had colour and ITV since 1976! Back in the good old days it was BBC 1 in black and white.
