I was wondering if anyone has ever opened up the gearbox on these. The unit works ok but is stiff to move from neutral into the first lever indent position and I was hoping to reduce the 'severity' of the action.I was just expecting to be able to open up the unit but it seems to be riveted together.
Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

Jim

If the gearbox is anything like the 2003 proceed carefully, I had a changing problem which I tried to solve, finished up taking it to a Volvo workshop as I had only made it worse, can't remember the details but it had something to do with shims.

It is not a gearbox inside the control but a rocking lever mechanism, which can get stiff or the detents wear. Dismantle it and clean it. as already suggested there are many different variations of morse control levers, but the can all be taken apart, although sometimes with difficulty because of corrosion of the fastenings. Worth also checking the gearbox end by disconnecting the cable and checking whether the operating lever works smoothly. Cables also eventually wear, particularly if they have sharp bends.

Hi,
I've attached some pics of the bare unit. I was expecting screws holding this together. Tried to drill out one of the rivets, but chickened out !

Looks like a Teleflex B700 control. Usually, friction in these mechanisms is the result of poor lubrication of the external components, which you've already removed. There's no point trying to break into the casing, as you wouldn't be able to reassemble it satisfactorily. If lubricating it as best you can and then putting the shift arm and throttle control back on doesn't work, it's time for a new one. If the lever moves freely without the cables attached, it would seem to indicate a cable or gearbox problem.

I'll take your advice and quit while I'm ahead. It is still working, just notchier than I would want.
Many thanks for your input
JD

From experience with gear changers on bicycles when they stop working properly frequent application with WD40 usually frees up the changer then add some 3 in 1 oil, This originally took 3-4 days to free up must get out on my bike more often!!
