My teleflex control is side mounted so that when the lever is vertical the gearbox is in neutral. When moved to the left it is ahead and when moved to the right is in astern. When going ahead the lever moves through about 25 degrees pulling the gearbox lever into engaged and thereafter operating the throttle only. Until the lever has gone through the 25 degrees of movement the throttle will not engage (by design). Trouble is that before the lever gets through its first 25 degs the gearbox lever is fully engaged and forcing the lever further causes the cable to be pulled through the grip on the control lever mechanism. I cannot see for the life of me how to adjust things so that the control is smooth, strain free and positive. All I can think of is to put the threaded stub through which the cable inner is screwed onto a different lever mounting hole on to a position closer to the axle so as to reduce the travel of the cable when actioned.

I hope this makes sense. Its a real bummer when coming up to my moorings and being unable to quickly select neutral to stop the boat so I can pick up the bouy.

You help with my dillema would be most appreciated.

Are you sure that you have assembled and connected the control properly? Years ago I had the same problem, and discovered that I had put the thing together the wrong way. Because there are so many possible variants of cable puching and pulling, the correct way to assemble isn't always obvious. If I remember correctly, the throttle cable is 'sprung' back under tension in the neutral position.

Has it always been like that or has the fault developed over time? This will affect the replies which the learned gentlefolk on this forum give to you.

My boat had been laid up for quite some time. The problem appeared only after the relaunch following considerable renovations. So i guess the problem appeared when i wasn't watching, as it were.

This type of problem only usually happens when the connection to the gearbox is moved, check where the outer of the cable is clamped to the plate on the gearbox, it may have moved or needs adjustment.

Do you get the same effect when selecting astern? If so it could be that the length of travel of the control is different from the required movement at the gearbox, if not it may be that the cable length requires adjusting so that neutral on the control gives the centre point of the gearbox lever travel.

I have fiddled around and now it seems to be working. There is excessive play of the cable at the lever fitting ( the cable outer cannot be clamped properly) Anyway, I hope it continues to work because I really don't know what I have done!

Thanks for everyone's input.
