Bringing a boat round from the Medway on Monday.
08.00 dept from Chatham.
Lock office has suggested arriving about 4pm should be OK.
Sound about right ?
Overnight at Teddington, then on to Penton.
Back up to St Kats on Friday.
Then the delights of the M25...............

Okay just been updated from a number of commercial users and the ‘inside’ upstream appears to be okay ( but not 100%) sure. Downstream will be high tide only for the foreseeable future with no fix date in site. Practically makes my boat unusable

Following a virtual meeting with senior EA Thames managers today:

The barge lock is currently available for passage from 90 minutes before HW Teddington until HW Teddington

Very soon they plan to operate the lock for passage from 0900-1830 daily.
The lock will need to be operated by two lock-keepers and rotas are being adjusted to achieve this.
This will affect manning levels at upstream locks.
Only the gate paddles will be used and trials suggest that the lock will empty in about 8 minutes.

The barge lock has been in use as the only lock for nearly two years and is showing its age with both culvert and hydraulic problems

The launch lock requires extensive repairs which are now funded but will take the rest of the year to complete. It is planned to be back in service by April 2026.

The gov.uk site will be updated and PLA requested to issue an Notice to Mariners.

Thank you. This is incredibly helpful.

Came through yesterday with about 6 other boats 5 from our neck of the woods and a single soul ferrying an open launch back to Oxford after officiating at the Boat Race.

One umpire launch, booked to work at the Boat Races, failed to get to Putney due to the lack of information supplied by the EA

Is there a figure missing here, please? Or no locks on the falling tide?

The reality is this is going to screw up Easter plans for many.

Whilst i moor at a Tedd and have the option to go down I simply won’t bother as I wanted to cruise up to the pub.

Actually facing the prospect of not being able to do this easily the whole summer. Which begs the question what’s the point in keeping it.

Even a well planned club cruise down will have challenges with timings.

Utter pain for all and utterly predictable.

Update:
Dear TWF member

As one of our valued stakeholders, we wanted to update you on the current situation with the operation of Teddington Lock. You may be aware there is currently restricted access to navigation at the lock, which is normally open 24 hours. The main Launch Lock at Teddington is currently closed whilst we progress its major refurbishment. While this lock is closed, we are managing boat traffic through the Barge Lock and we have been working on improving its reliability.

On 3 April 2025 we unfortunately had to restrict operation of the lock to only taking place at high tides. We recognise the inconvenience this is causing our customers, especially those who rely on the lock for their business. Our priority is always to keep our staff and customers safe.

We have been working quickly to put the necessary arrangements and processes in place to increase availability of the lock for the Easter weekend and beyond.

We have established working practices at the Barge Lock which allows us to operate the lock gate sluices instead of relying completely on the culvert sluices. This will require two people to operate safely. We have had to review our staffing for Teddington Lock and secure additional resource to support ongoing operation of the lock between 9am and 5pm. We can now let you know that over the Easter weekend, operation will take place on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday between 9am and 5pm. The last lock movement will be 30 minutes beforehand. On Saturday, operation will only be available at high tides. As this has been done at pace, we are not able to confirm additional availability for Saturday at this time. We are working to secure staff resources for Saturday and the rest of next week, and we will update you again if this changes.

We are developing a more detailed briefing which we will share on Gov.uk and via Facebook once we have clear arrangements for ongoing operation for the rest of the season. We are also working to accelerate the necessary actions to improve the longer-term reliability and operability of the Barge Lock within our available resources.

We would like to thank our customers for their patience while we have worked to find solutions to increase the availability passage through the lock.

We will update the harbour master notice on Gov.uk to reflect this position.

Please share this message as you feel appropriate.

Kind regards,

Maria Herlihy

Thames Waterway Manager
