As mentioned elsewhere, I need to replace about 70 teak plugs. I have measured several of them, several times, and they are 9mm.... I cant make them 8mm, nor can I make them 10mm /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What sizes do teak plugs come in? Any even number from 6mm to 12mm, and I can only find 10mm on the Island, (Malta). I'll probably get some delivered to home by Mailspeed, or whoever, and SWMBO can bring them out when she comes to Greece.

The question is.... what size do I order? Presumably 8mm? or can anyone find 9mm? or have they expanded since fitting?

Many Thanks

Richard

I think you'll find that they're tapered.

How does that work for different depths of hole, where they are chopped off at differing diameters for different depths?

And would they be tapered from 9mm at the top, and 8mm at the bottom?

They dont look tapered here:

Just drill the holes out to the size you have! I expect they will originally be 3/8 inch and you can still get a cutter to make your own of that size. If you are going to use standard ready made ones then you have to make the hole the right size.

Not all plugs are tapered, though proper ones are, similarly, plug cutters come in tapered and non tapered variety, the cheaper ones seem to be the ones that are not tapered, if you have access to a pillar drill, why not order up a set of tapered plug cutters and make your own? Any old off ends of teak or Iroko would do the job for you.

These are what I use mostly......

The trouble with parrallel cut plugs, is that it is not so easy to get a nice tight and almost invisible fit.

Possibly, but born of 45 years in the trade /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Stanley plug cutter for a No 8 screw holds up 9 m/m.
they are parallel cut but have a rounded leading edge

That's probably what they are then. Not sure I can ask you to make 70 for me, and deliver them to either Manchester or Malta.

I can buy 70 x 10mm plugs, and drill out the holes a bit - seems to be the most sensible idea, given my location, unless there is a good reason not to do it this way.

(in fact, it makes sense to buy a hundred or so, as others will be on their way out /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ).

Many Thanks

It seems a [--word removed--] of a job just to enlarge the hole by 1mm but for info the way to do it is to put in some sacrificial s/w plugs first, you need a piece of say 10mm mild steel, drill a hole through it of the diameter of plug you want, you then cut the sw to the rough size, eg 9mm x 9mm, take off the four corner and then drive the timber (along the grain) through the plate and you end up with 9mm dia dowel, glue in place, cut off and you can then redrill to the correct diameter.
