Now then lads!!
Why go to all this trouble trying to keep your boats in "as new" condition?
Externally used teak is naturally a silvery grey colour. You can obtain this effect by doing absolutely nothing. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Then just prior to resale you scrub it all with a normal scrubbing brush - ensuring you go across the grain - and hey presto you have got the finish that buyers mistakenly expect /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Sikkens Novatech/Novatop comes out top in all the tests of "bright" finishes. See Classic Boat for latest report on it in the Med environment. Once you have used it you wont go back to other coatings.

I have tried just about all of the systems over the last 30 years on my boat and nothing gets anywhere near it for durability. 5 years on the mast and just needed recoating. Only drawback is less than glossy finish, but still looks like varnished wood.

Eeyore, same type of boat and same aggresive sunny environment .... I have tried everything as I have a lot of teak trim and mahogany panels. Varnish exposed to mediterranean sun does not last. I only use it on the wheel and washboards as the cockpit is fully covered when I am not on board. I have tried epoxy sealer, one pack and two pack varnishes, everything fails except for Burgess woodsealer as mentioned once above. It does work, it is easy to keep touched up and as it is not a varnish it does not flake off. Not cheap but in my experience it is well worth it. I also have a wooden dinghy which was once completely stripped down at home and recoated first with epoxy sealer then built up with many, many coats of varnish. Looked great when it went back on board but the UV destroyed the varnish in just 6 months as it was open to full sun all the time. Painted it white now and that is lasting year after year but not a solution for the wood trim on the boat, I am sure you will agree.

OK, thanks to all.

The 'oiled' foot brace is already showing signs of wear after just a week or so.

So I guess it's back to varnishing (Epifanes) again....and again....and again.....and again! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
