J. P. Corrys used to stock teak in sleeper size heavy sections and would saw a baulk up into planks of any specified thickness for you and even run them through their planer; (Long ago, I am not sure if they still do or even if they are still there, but there is bound to be an importer in N.I.) a good joinery shop will custom make the grating to your dimensions, there are plenty of them about and work is slack, the work is straightforward though it does require precision.
The price will still make your eyes water a bit.

Googling 'Teak Grating' you get about half a dozen companies in the UK such as K. J. Howells in Poole offering to make you one. I suspect the local joinery shop might be cheaper than most of them in these straitened times.

This morning I was reading a very nice, old, detailed document describing almost everything fitted aboard HMY Britannia...
...decked throughout in 2" thick teak!
Over 400' long x 55' beam...even accounting for curves, that must be half an acre of thick hardwood.
The document was from the 'fifties. I wonder how thick those decks are now? Any estimates of replacement cost?

412' x 55' (less let's say 25% for curves) = c16,000'sq; x 144 makes 2304000 cubic inches, x 2 because the planking is 2" thick, x £0.15 equals...
...very nearly £700,000. Just for the planking, unfitted.
That'd be a fair few pots of caulking, too.

The kilned Iroko that I bought only cost €32.43 per cubic foot and is just as good as teak - and arguably better in many respects.

I ordered two made to measure teak gratings from Sheraton Marine in Winter 2003/04 and they are excellent. Seemed pricey at the time at £315 incl.VAT for a total area of 59 in.x23 in. but they look as if they'll outlast me.

Agree. I have made 3 of these. Excellent if you can use the standard size and much cheaper than custom made. They also sell the material already machined if you want to make up your own custom size/shape. More expensive than the kit but cheaper than the made up ones. Such choice!
