Tcm's European Road Trip (a bit boaty)

Re: Tcm\'s European Road Trip (a bit boaty)

Matt,

Great story and adventure that. Nothing like hitting the road but I would have liked a day or two more!

Hope you do not run into 'Friends of the Earth'. I got caught out on Hammersmith High Street the other day. They started questioning me about how many non-essential car trips I make every week. They would not believe that a 150 mile roundtrip to get to work was essential and that if I did not burn a few gallons of diesel every weekend in my boat that I would go insane! infact they recommend I plant some trees to make up for my irresponsible attitude....and I thought confession at church was bad enough /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Anyway, having just read this great tale I can just imagine Matts response to the question "have you made any unnessesary car trips lately" /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. Infact can I please have permision to plagurise your story for them the next time I get nabbed!

Just 31 years and 5 months till retirement for me.......I wonder if we still have cars or if Europe will still exist..

Cheers

Paul

Re: Tcm\'s European Road Trip (a bit boaty)

A whole load of cars were stopped in a friends of earth protest a few years ago, them all on bikes with us fuming in cars, backed all the way up Park Lane. Not very organised they started sort of sneeringly circling infrontof us, asking loudly if we knew how much fuel we wasted due to this or that large car. I was in merc sports car at the time, and right at the front. So i'mafraid i gave them what for. I toldem i wd be using loads more fuel than normal due to being held up by a bunch of [--word removed--] on brand new bicycles, eachone of them made with ridiculously expensive metals such as titanium- any idea of the massive extra fuel needed to smelt titanium, have you, hm? They moved on.

But like ymany people i do wonder how sustainable it is for anyone t get ona plane for jolly jaunt for peanuts, go on long car journeys for fun, or indeed buy giant plastic boats which regardless of whether wind-assisted or not all make similarly large demands in manufacture.

Son#2, whenaged about eight i think -I had a new car and toldim we'd just go for a drive around. Incredulous, he asked - "are you allowed to do that - just drive around for no reason at all?!"

He's got over that now, then?

I must admit when I travel South on the M6 and see all the traffic on the other side streaming North, I do wonder "Why don't we all just stay where we are?"

Re: Tcm\'s European Road Trip (a bit boaty)

Had wondered the same thing.

Maybe those who saw the dead pig left in the car episode of "The Mythbusters" some time back will understand what it was like in TCM's car during the trip - is it true that it is still at the car valet's /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif?

Did enjoy the post though.

Budapest can be a bit grey on the outside (tho' quite spectacular/romantic location over the river), but the fun of the place is is the party attitude to life, the public baths (most famously the Gellert

Is there an association between these two? I mean I'm all in favour of being clean but Budapest seems a rather long way to go for a swim.

You have phones with curly cables? How quaint.

If you rely on cordless phones (we have 2) you're knackered in a power-cut. So we also have a wall-mounted normal phone which works all the time. Even mobile batteries die after a while. Power-cuts are a big consideration when your electricity comes through the woods on poles.

Anyway if you didn't have a cable to untwist what would you do with your time?
