They stayed at their anchorage in river in Vivero (just east of La Coruna) last night no probs.

Looking at the life wind data http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/quikscat.php?station=62001 they are right under the worst bit. The models show that there it is likely to be blowing hardest over this area (www.wetterzentrale.de, theyr etc) for next 24 hours, though much lighter wind to West. So they may be able to move from Sunday morning, punching through a bit of rough, then much lighter winds to West round La Coruna and down Portugese coast.

Any thoughs

The blow was actually quite localised in terms of wind strength, if you look at real time wind speed data, so hopefully won't have blown up too many waves. Should be able to tell this from bouy data (which is showing 10' wave height mid Biscay currently)later today.

Sorry I really wouldn't like to call it. The different models keep suggesting different results. The only likelihood at the moment that I could suggest is that it will settle by middle of next week which is blooming useless.

I'm most tempted to give him a 50/50 call for now, then check out some life buoy data(which gives wave and wind) and live sat wind, to see what real life conditions late tomorrow morning or Mon. If he can get round La Coruna ok, the conditions should be a lot better

Brendan .. go with it .. I can only do the forecast model stuff, and your detail is much much more relevant ... agreed about La Coruna and all points South though. I'm in Barca tomorrow and then Marseilles and Porquerolles.. at this rate we'll be waving 'Hi" ...

Struggling a bit on that one (cos my language skills aren't up to it)but do like the tidal stream model, which a few UK sites should look at

Excellent, thanks. Spoke to Matt, and he said that they were very sheltered and surrounded by Ria's about 1000' high, so had a good night, but were still measuring 15-20knts, so very glad not to have been out at sea!

They tried to find an internet cafe this afternoon and failed, and are now on fuel berth rather than anchored, but no one has tried to charge them for mooring yet.

Looking in detail at models and forecasts, La Coruna might still be too rough to take tomorrow, but will monitor buoy data for sea conditions, and make decision on late Sun or early Mon departure.

Some of the wave models show wave height decreasing over Sun.mon.tues, but increasing again off Portugese coast Wed, so he'd like to make good progress over next few days

Yes, I found a swell forecast that showed 16ft for NW Spain tomorrow so I suggested that he stay put till Mon am at the earliest. La Coruna was showing F6 today from the West. Is there any buoy data for the Portugese coast?

Using this site http://www.buoyweather.com/wxnav.jsp?region=SP&program=Maps its looks like Monday 6pm is the time to move and then don't delay till south of Cape Finisterre. Its not called the "Coast of Death" for nothing and its a lee shore.

Correlate between this site, the Meteosim site and the Galician maritime site to get a good idea. The best idea is to start talking to the local fishermen. I always find them to be the best.

I'd keep well offshore as well.

Yes, we found anything with over 80m of water was much more comfortable. However we found Biscay to be more comfortable inshore of the ridge where the depth rises to 150m 'ish at 45'N.
