I've been using Oregon Chainsaw 2T oil rather than TC-W3 in my outboards for 10 years or so without problems.

I've always been meaning to use the right oil but it's convenient to stick to one mixture for all the engines I own, not least because it reduces the chances of petrol sitting around stale. (I don't use much.)

So, google suggests that the main problem with Chainsaw spec oil in the Outboard rather than TC-W3 is coking up. I'm not seeing any evidence of that, and it seems a small price to pay anyway. When I were a lad we just used whatever engine oil we had to hand, anyway, so I find it hard to imagine it's critical.

So... before I invest in my next can of 2T oil, convince me I really need to buy dedicated oil for each engine.

I will risk the 'inquisition' ..... but Chainsaw Oil 2T is produced to withstand the higher running temp of the air cooled motor. It is also an oil that does not have reduced environmental impact.
TC-W or the 2T oil produced for water cooled engines is not designed to withstand the higher temps of air cooled engines.

So taking those points - you are basically Ok with your Chainsaw oil. But I would not advise running TC-W in your Chainsaw ..

OK ... but nowadays many brands of 2T oil have universal ... designed to use in both types of engine ...

I stopped buying TC-W many years ago and only use Universal now ... in all my 2T engines ... boat and ashore.

I think it is confusing chain oil with 2T engine oil.

The logic was that the oil that is designed to run hotter wouldn't be fully burned by the cooler running engine. I'm a bit skeptical because the fuel is on fire, I very much doubt it needs the extra heat from the slightly hotter surrounding metal to fully combust the oil. It certainly wasn't talking about bar oil.

Chain Oil would be completely wrong to use as its a light light body oil designed just to lubricate chain in a groove ... but Chainsaw 2T oil is definitely an oil designed for hotter running air cooled engines ..

Its is most likely that Chain Oil would coke up if used in the Petroil mix.
