Some may have seen the note on the CA website concerning taxes and harbour dues that might be levied in Spain. The URL is http://www.cruising.org.uk/Spanish_Taxes.htm. I am a joint author of that note.
There is one aspect of slight uncertainty. This concerns boat owners who are not resident in Spain ie they spend less than 183 days in Spain in any period of 12 months. They may or may not own property in Spain. The key point is how long the individual spends in the country.
There have been some reports/rumours that boat owners in this category and leaving their boats in a port have been charged a wealth tax on their boats but we have no confirmed examples. To be completely sure, we are trying to get clarification on this issue. If anyone thinks that they have been so charged, that information would be useful. If anyone can provide chapter and verse could they please reply to me.
Before replying, please ensure that you are being charged Impuesto sobre el Patrimonio (Wealth Tax) and not a harbour charge, harbour due or light dues such as G-5, T-5, T-0 or some such similar name. We think that there may be confusion in some people’s minds because a surcharge or even a fine may result from failure to pay or late payment of these charges for boats staying in a marina or port for some months. Note – these charges do not seem to be applied uniformly.
Many thanks.
