For the lazyjacks, get hold of Ann Hammick's "Ocean Cruising on a Budget" in which she gives com, plete instructions on how to build them. The only modification I made to that was making the lines pass through fairleads on the mast and come back down to small nylon cleats about 7 feet above the cabintop so that I can release the lazyjacks and hook them on the reefing hooks at the gooseneck so that I didn't have to modify the mainsail cover.

Welcome aboard Daffin, Please take some time to fill in some details on your profile, it will help us all provide better answers to your questions if have some idea of your location and yacht type, model, length etc.

Re, Lazy Jacks, I would first look around for a yacht the same as yours to an idea of the best location for the lines; if this is not possible try the following, but don't make anything permanent till you have tried it a few times.

I don't like lazy jack lines flopping around when I'm sailing so I have a halyard to pull them up when I am ready to drop the main, but you can fix them to the mast.

Just above the spreaders (If you have the single swept back type) is a good starting point. this line should terminate with a ring attached about one third from the top, attach 3 lines to the ring, run them under the boom and back up the ring on the other sine of the main; The most aft line should be about 3 feet from the end or the boom, the most forward line should be about 4 feet from the mast, the middle line should be about 2 feet from the aft most line.
These should be lashed to the boom temporarily till you find the best location. One have hoisted and lowered the main a few times and are happy with the location, attach some small stainless steel 'Ds" to the underside of the boom, or run a line along the bottom the boom and lash the lazy jack lines to it to prevent them working forward.

There are some formulas that say one third this and half that, but we all have our own preferences, so a bit of trial and hopefully not too much error and you should have a good system.

Hope this helps. . . . . . . .

Lazy Jack lines are only cordage, 6 mm would be a heavy set up, 4 mm is plenty, also the lines need some slack or they will deform the sail shape if left up, and tight.

For the above reasons, lazy jacks can not replace a boom topping lift.

I Hope this helps. . . . . .

But you can use lazy jacks when you have a spring loaded boom vang, like I have. When I got the boat a few years ago, the previous owner still had on the topping lift, but after I had fixed the boom vang(it didn't have a spring inside), I dispensed with it. Works fine with my speing loaded vang and no messing about when reefing, just release the vang, boom rises and the reef easily.

G'day Richard,

I think the question was "can lazy jacks replace a boom topping lift" not what can I replace a topping lift with.

Mind you, I have never shortened (raised the boom) with the topping lift prior to reefing either, but I can see it 'might' help.
