Dear friends,

I'm currently looking to upgrade to 40ft open boat (approx. 2 years old), and I'm selecting between:
- Fairline Targa 40
- Princess V42
- Windy 42 Grand Bora

I believe Targa and V42 are very similar boats (layouts, engines, etc.). On the other side, Windy has quite different layout, but it's very smooth to drive.

Your experiences? Thanks.

We sell the V42 and Windy and I have delivered all three up and down the coast of Norway.
The Windy will give the best ride and handling in all conditions and is probably the most solid boat with good attention to detail. The other two share hulls from Olesinki and are also good sea boats, its down to individual taste, non are bad boats I'd say they are in the top 5 in that type of boat.
The Windy will hold its value better as the quality and handling are benchmark according to MBY tests.
Also look at the engine hours, and specs and what if any extra equipment is installed and of course evidence of servicing.

They're all well proven, and highly regarded boats, so I don't think you'll go far wrong with any of them. As always, depends on how you plan to use it. Whilst non of them could be described as tardis boats, the Targa and V42 have a bit more accomodation space, but the trade off is that the Windy will probably be a bit more sea kindly. If its a day boat/overnighter/weekender i'd look closely at the Windy, but if you plan to spend a fair bit of time on board i'd sacrifice the slightly better ride for the extra space and comfort of the other two.

the Windy will surely have the most sport boat handling of the three
the Fairline 40 Targa is the best hull sea kindly compromise, while the V42 is the most beefy but also gives the most bumpier ride of these
still the Fairline does offer a cramped cockpit for its size if you will be five plus out there it does feel tight
for 2 years old I would also put the Atlantis 42 in that list, a tab above in finishing above all and does handle better to the Princess altough a dash less to the Fairline
and having a look at Absolute 39 and 41 would not harm eighter

If the gobbi atlantis is of interest Inwards marine at Southamptons hamble point have one on there books with the later d6 engines at right money.

Thanks for all replies. Well, most of brokers round here (Croatia, Slovenia, north-east of Italy) suggested to buy English boat, which should be better quality when compared to Italians. Yes, Italians are more contemporary and bling-bling, but the quality?

That's why I've narrowed my selection to mentioned brands.

nah I am sure these brokers do sell English boats...
for suggesting on boats I better speak to a surveyor then to a broker, a broker will always promote what he has to sell whatever it is

I had an Italian boat for 14 years +, and now on my second over a year and my Italian experience so far has been postive
do I look at other makers sure why not

...maybe that's a sign!

Some guys vote for English boats, other for Italians,....probably I should just buy the Norwegian one (and spend some additional €€€).

Finally, I always prefer ride/seakeeping/security over accomodation.

I love Windy boats for the reasons of ride and handling, but of your three I think the Targa 40 is also worht a look. Get one with D6 engines and you wont go worng. Better layout than the Bora, and from what i have seen handling and sea keeping seem to be excellent.

Also, you get a garage, dining area and forward facing crew seat. there is a lot going on in the cokpit, but all the sapce is very well used.

I think you should say something about your last weekend's trip, Jimmy.

Very impressive long weekend cruise for any boat - thats a long way - and the Targa 40 seemed to handle it very well.

Hi Mike

Yep - I've just been looking at the videos from the run down, I'll try and chop out a couple of small clips and I'll stick a post up later on today. Btw I eventually found the factory reset button on the stereo, and that sorted everything out. We 'enjoyed' Dizzee Rascal at full pelt on the way home!

Cheers
Jimmy
