Hi All

Looking for thoughts, views and if possible owners feedback on Targa 40's. Its high on my list as a new purchase.

Specifically D6 models.

Cheers!

I had a t40 and jimmy the builder still does and has taken it to bits and made it into a targa 42 with an extended platform.

I thought it was great and to be honest had pretty much no complaints or issues.

The only vise thinking about it was the steering rams which are external. This is well known and if you assume every 2 years when doing bellow you change the rams you are not far out. I used to buy recon Ones off eBay ( don't know if they still do them ) but they were cheap and worked well.

Alternatively you leave them weeping and top of the steering fluid which is fine unless they fail all together ( which they do not seem to do )

Many thanks. I guess any specifics would be -

When looking at one, anything in specific to this boat to look out For?
Engine Bay access - all ok for maintenance?
Has an onan genset - any good and is it expensive to maintain?
Is the boat happy with long distance cruising, say Hamble to the Scillies for hols?

Cheers

Engine access very good for servicing - you can lift the garage floor up and this creates excellent access to everywhere except perhaps the outboard side of the stbd engine.

I've got a 4kw Onan MDKBH in mine which has been fine. Service parts are relatively expensive for what they are, but in an absolute sense it doesn't cost much. (I presume you're talking about a specifc boat here, genset was not standard equipment but an optional extra).

When we had the boat in the UK we did Brighton-Dartmouth in one hit more than once, was fine. Ditto Brighton - Guernsey. In the Med the longest single leg we've done is about 110nm.

I had two. Purchased the first one second hand from Peters - a couple of problems:

1. The Onan 4kw genset blew up - Onan replaced it under warranty as it was less than 5 years old but a friend who had the same genset in Turkey had exactly the same problem so clearly a design fault. So well worth having it checked over and there is an Onan expert on this forum.

2. The stringers came away from the hull when coming back from Guernsey. So I would suggest a comprehensive survey.

Peters replaced the boat with a brand new Targa 40 - this one was faultless and the Targa 40 is a great boat.

I have one for sale but with KAD 44's. Had it for 6 years now. Great boat with practical layout. Engine access was a big plus for me compared to previous boats. Also tender garage usefull with young kids to store toys as well as a tendar.Mine has a Paguero genny. Kad version seems to have less trouble with the oudrives as the rams are internal and less expensive electronics. That said the D6 do seem to have a nice grunt for some extra speed but at the cost of higher maintenance. I had Sunseekers before and found the Targa well put together and practical. Full electric diagrams in the documentations which was a nice change. Did a 4 hour sea crossing @ 25 knots on the delivery trip up to a force 4 and the boat took it in its stride with ease. Easy to manouver with 2 drives and a bow thruster. Never understood the need for a stern thruster as the drives can do the same. Had to get used to the high radar arch but soon realized it makes the cockpit very roomy and airy when closed up so you don't get the feeling you are in a tent.
In that size I would stuggle to find an alternative today unless going hardtop.

Want to ugrade to a Targa 52 to have an extra cabin.
