TAMD73P EDC slow to start

Hello all

Interesting problem that has arisen on one of my engines - the starboard one starts up perfectly. No issues.

EDC for the portside engine lights up correctly and with no fault codes. But then...nothing when I turn the key. 20 seconds later - the engine starts without further intervention from me (not evening turning the key again).

When the port engine does decide its ready to wake up, it turns over the customary number of times before firing and then runs nicely. Nothing "mechanical" at fault I suspect (especially as Volvopaul has not long since serviced them both) - more an electronic issue perhaps?

Both were working perfectly until a couple of weeks ago and once started, are running absolutely fine.

Any ideas? I have in mind to check the battery voltages next time I'm down (both are on separate starters) but there's no flickering of lights or anything on the port side - just a certain reluctance to join the party.

Could be low voltage recognition to the edc , are you trying with battery charger on or off ?
 
Just been down to the boat - darned thing started on the button today. Only thing I can think is that the charger isn't charging the starter battery properly and/or that battery is a bit iffy - and because it hadn't been run for a while, it had a sub-prime level of charge last time around. Having been out for a run last weekend, it had had chance to be properly charged.

Will keep an eye on it.

If it’s any consolation we had the odd similar scenario.One played hard to fire up and needed the x over switch .Bit intermittently with reasonable time interval to not warrant a proper investigation.

How ever a cockpit fridge became a bit iffy , kept turning off , then the galley fridge .
Thought I was just getting fridge issues

Coincidentally we had a boat sparky for a week fitting new air con and mentioned the fridge thing to him .As although possible I guess just seemed odd two dicky fridges .

About an hour later while fiddling about in the ER fitting pumps etc he popped up and said

“ Do you realise your chargers max output is only 4 AH ? “

Was a 40 AH unit .

He had tested the charger it was OEM and about 12 years old .
He went on to say he sees this often . Apparently they don’t just pop ( often ) they just decay or one of the “ smart “ functions drops off like it looses it bulk .

A new ( he calculated a 80 AH ) charger fixed the fridge issue - they turn off at a certain voltage drop to protect from a deep and damaging discharge.
Starter issue , which I never told the sparky about disappeared too .

Sorry I don’t know exactly how he and his mate checked the charger , but there was a lot of switching on and off on the console by one guy while the other connected up something in the ER .
