Hi All,

Does anyone know what the capacity of the seawater side of the cooling system is on a Volvo Penta TAMD63P-A?

I am planning to do a Rydlyme flush, but in order to buy the correct amount of the chemical, I need to know how many litres in total the seawater side holds and I have asked Volvo Penta dealers across the country and no one seems to know for sure!

Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks

Paul

not an absolute measure but I used to put 25L of antifreeze mix in my 63Ps over the winter. Thats from the raw water strainer until it starts coming out the exhaust.

edit- its actually fairly easy to just dismantle the cooling system on a 63P and give all the intercoolers- especially the Charge Air Cooler a proper clean inside and out. If thats not been done for quite a while you will notice the difference. Having looked at the price of rydlyme compared to the Volvo O rings you will need, its a no brainer.

Hi Kashurst, thanks very much for the info. I'm inclined to agree with you on the price of Rydlyme; I'd rather do a proper dismantle and clean. Are there any good "how to's" that you know of on t'internet or any other resources that might help. I'm good on the tools and a fairly decent amateur / enthusiast mechanic on my own boats for years, but never done the cooling system on these 63s.
Cheers
Paul

Its pretty straight forward, I think its well described in the owners manual if you have one.
otherwise: drain the antifreeze mix out the block (fitting on other side of engine low down ish)
take off all the rubber hoses and little plastic pipes.
undo the oil pressure sensor bracket behind the alternator and tie it out of the way
start undoing bolts - don't forget the single bolt down the back of the cooling water heat exchanger else it won't come off.
I find a good 3/8" socket set better than a 1/2" as you get better access. Worth getting the allen key on a socket for all the hex head bolts on the end caps. Don't loose the alignment ball from the charge air cooler.
have fun

OK thanks again for the info! I think I'll do this at the end of the season as I spent a fortune putting new Volvo antifreeze in this winter.

Cheers,
Paul

you don't have to bin the antifreeze when you drain it down. Just collect it in a clean container and when you are finished just pour it back in again. It doesn't go off for many years, especially if you have only just changed it.
